Re: News - Scan offers PayPal payment with a difference

Nice to see Scan doing this. Having Google Checkout wouldn't hurt either
But the thing is what about the Paypal fees? Will Scan have to foot that, or does it come to the same or less than what they pay for their payment system? (Assuming you gotta pay for a system so that you can accept credit card and debit card payments on your website etc)

Yeah, much better to withdraw money from Paypal to bank (it's free last time I checked ) and pay direct to Scan - Visa or whatever take less of a cut I think.

And well, if you haven't dealt with Scan before and are worried about giving details, if you trust Paypal more it's abit silly

Whilst Paypal will take a chunk of Scan's reciepts as fees, so do Visa, Mastercard et al... card processing doesn't come for free. The benefit to retailers of accepting cards is that it's easier for us to spend money with them so we spend more and more than make up for the fees charged.

Re: News - Scan offers PayPal payment with a difference

I see this as a GOOD thing.

It means Scan will have to deliver to my work address (where I can sign for stuff), instead of to my home address (whilst I'm in work ) as is currently the case if I pay with my debit card.

Re: News - Scan offers PayPal payment with a difference

I'm still trying to figure out why ANYONE would use Paypal in the first place. Paypal (owned by ebay) has amendments to their User Policy, which allows Paypal to withhold users funds for 21-180 days at their "sole discretion" with no arbitration process. With ebay Inc. using this amendment, ebayers & Paypal users are getting burnt at rapid rates. Oh, by the way, ebay is now FORCING the majority of users to use Paypal ONLY! Convenient money maker for them, huh? Especially since ebay Inc. KEEPS the interest they make on those funds while denying users access to their money!

BEWARE OF USING PAYPAL AND EBAY!!!

To learn more, search the internet for "Ebay Stockholders and Sellers Calling For Immediate Termination of John Donohoe CEO Petition" (at petitiononline).

See what ebay/Paypal's own employees are saying about the HORRENDOUS management at ebay Inc.

I sure won't allow any of my money or accounts to be involved with ebay or Paypal!!!

Did you register to post this rant?

I've had no problems with eBay or Paypal. Mostly it's what you buy and where you buy from imo. If you're stupid enough to buy used phones and high value items then why go for eBay in the first place. Personally i think it's a good service, it's handy for paying for things in the US (really handy, in fact) because you don't have to pay extra for converting and so on.

PayPal and eBay are intrinsically linked. Would you rather give out your credit/debit card details to random eBay users? I wouldn't. The problem with people being scammed from eBay is that you're not buying from a company. A lot of complaints about PayPal are "i was scammed on eBay but PayPal won't reimburse me", eBay are just middle men. The difference with retailers like Scan is that they are the only people you deal with, it's a proper business so you can complain to trading standards if they fleece you.

In any case, unless you haven't noticed - this is a thread about SCAN not eBay. As you'll see on these forums, Scan has a (worthy) very high reputation for customer service. I trust them and, for now, i trust PayPal. Ultimately if you've had a bad experience then keep away, and fair enough, but there are plenty of people who use it all the time with no problems - as i said, i've never been scammed either on 'Bay or through PayPal (and i've used it a lot for overseas orders).

As for fees, presumably the projected growth in sales due to more people willing to use PayPal rather than credit/debit outweighs it?

Most likely. But I still ordered direct instead of Paypal as I was thinking maybe they'd get less through Paypal. Dunno just me I suppose

Glad to hear this, the times I've used scan they've been nothing short of excellent, and I find using paypal alot more convenient than my debit card, put the two together and you get an excellent service from a very reputable company and a convenient method of payment, could you ask for more from an e-tailer?

Re: News - Scan offers PayPal payment with a difference

I agree with Whiternoise. I've used PayPal to make some payments (such as server charges) for years, and never as hint of a problem. What I don't do is buy much from eBay, and if I do, it's generally from reputable places (like HP's outlet). Never a problem with that, either.

And on one occasion, it potentially saved considerable hassle. A shop I'd bought from had their server hacked and thousands of users had their card details stolen. I'd paid via PayPal so the shop didn't have my card details. As soon as found out, I spoke to the bank and they cancelled the card and reissued anyway, just to be on the safe side. But it prevented the likelihood of having to sort out fraudulent charges. That happened once before when Post Office sorting staff nicked my new card before it reached me and ran up thousands of pounds of fraudulent purchases, some of it with companies I actually dealt with.

Like most things, there's good and bad about PayPal, and sometimes, it's down to unrealistic user expectations.

As for doing it by phone ..... not so sure about that. I'd want to look into that quite a bit more before doing it.

Scan + Paypal can't be bad. Good news. How about Google Checkout, now that would be useful.
