I expect its like the counterfeit games consoles that were being sold before Christmas.
The genuine article except they haven't been through quality control and have no warranty.

I don't know for sure but it probably isn't like that. They will be made in the same factories as the "real" ones. They may have been stolen or "lost" before they made it to the AMD partners, or as mentioned above they might have failed certain tests and been swiped instead of binned.

Its probably the same factory selling the products out the back door to another disributer. I bet Gecube are having serious dicussions with the factory in question.

The counterfeit will be the authorized manufacturer making more than they are contracted to.

Gecube will have subcontracted the manufacture of these cards to a factory somewhere in China, and signed a contract with them to make a certain number (100,000 perhaps), The factory would have received all the blueprints they need, and would have sourced their own GPUs, RAM and other components direct from wholesalers or ATI.

Anyway, the factory management probably got greedy and decided to make more than they where asked to, and sell the surplus on the grey market, so yes the counterfeit cards probably work perfectly well, they just won't have any sort of waranty support. The mystery is why this factory decided to label the extra cards as Gecube, rather than make up their own brand name.

i guess if they label them under a current name then they can just disappear, rather than a weird new brand appearing and people taking notice

Of course, but if you open it up you discover it's only a single 4830

i actually have one of those d-link wireless adapters. and let me tell you, even in that state i don't think it will perform a whole lot worse. was shocking.

and anyway, i wouldnt want one off ebay, that would be asking for it transaction in a secluded carpark is far safer
