There's a feature of W7 enterprise called "Branch Cache"? And it's got nothing to do with branch caching? Oh god that's going to be confusing.

Pricing, free for those who had vista inflicted upon them gets my vote, especially pre sp1.

Hopefully it will come with my next msdn update.

Guessing ultimate will be circa £250 at launch?

And are all of these x64 operating systems? The beta was released in 32 and 64 bit flavours after all

Better be an upgrade path for Vista users that is good value, otherwise Microsoft will feel one hell of a back lash from people who invested in Vista.

Re: News - Microsoft announces five Windows 7 SKUs

Windows 7 Starter, aimed at the emerging market, will allow only three applications to be run concurrently
... are they serious? three? hell sod that why are they limiting it all of a sudden? i know it's only on the basic OEM el-cheapo version but still...

... but at least you'll know what the new PC World ad campaign will be ...

"look at this! you can run a whole *three* things at once!"

Re: News - Microsoft announces five Windows 7 SKUs

I've seen lists of the SKUs floating about with a Windows 7 Home Basic on there as well. Supposedly is it the same as Starter but without the 3 app limitation.

    Any truth to this?

Nothing new, you won't get it in 'Developed' nations like ours.

Re: News - Microsoft announces five Windows 7 SKUs

    Hello,
I wonder how much windows 7 pro oem will cost? its has the feature set i was hoping for.
since the beta works so well i want microsoft to hurry up and get to rc and ship stage.

I think ultimate should be scrapped.

It might be suitable for netbooks. A license might cost around £20... that wouldn't be bad then... Someone will probably make a patch to bypass that limit anyway (would that be legal?)

Re: News - Microsoft announces five Windows 7 SKUs

Seems a good line up to me.

But I have to wonder what they mean by concurrent applications. I mean in my system tray I had MSN, Live Mesh, now if they count those, means i can either have a browers open, or email open.

Granted this is not likely to be used in the west so to speak. Ill prob just pick up Ultimate through work

    hey Funkstar,
seems hexus article got it wrong.
    see below
    link

windows 7 home basic is the version for devoloping nations and is limited to three applications running at once. its only sold to devoloping nations

windows 7 starter is just HP without the following:
Aero Glass, many Aero desktop enhancements, Windows Touch, Media Center, Live thumbnail previews, Home Group creation

windows 7 starter is the netbook version.
windows 7 starter is sold worldwide

That link to me looks pretty much like Branch Cache is *exactly* to do with branch caching. I was looking at Professional as havign all the features I require but now that Direct Access has been made Enterprise only I'm not so sure.

That said, screw it. I took down my domain infrastructure at home so I can live the the VPN into my Vigor 2820N. It's less accessible from a locked down network (for example if working from a client site) but does what I need it to.

To me, branch caching is a micro-architectural method applied in a CPU to speed up branches.

Aha, to me branch caching is something used to cache files locally at branch offices to reduce WAN traffic.
