data necessary to identify the location of mobile communication equipment
So by getting the information from the transmitters, they'll be able to locate where I am whenever my mobile is turned on?
Whatever next? GPS implants to watch us in the near future?

Presumably so few national authorities will qualify under this criterion that the whole issue will become redundant.
Haha, hooray!

In the words of the famous dog.... ooooooh yes :)
What makes me laugh is they use the term "Terrorism" as a blanket excuse to invade our rights, spy on us even more than normal and monitor our every move.
Next I'll be getting calls from the police asking why I've drawn 300 pounds out from the bank and what it's intend purpose is going to be and what I'm buying with it.
Yeah... but it's alright surely because there are 3-4 crackpots out there that we all need to be careful and on the lookout for "dodgy" things like those home office adverts say :)
Re: News - European Data Retention Directive comes into effect today
The absence of referenda on these issues scares me, especially when there are large groups publicly opposed to them.
They claim to be doing all of this for the security of the "free world" - meaning countries with a western-style pseudo democracy - but don't ever get round to asking whether we like the idea or not.
The question is not whether this new power will be corrupted but if the corruption has been pre-conceived, or will merely come at a future moment of weakness.

The politicians have been doing their utmost to subvert democracy for years now. "Terrorism" gives them the perfect excuse to do so. The sad fact is, they've been playing into the terrorists aims all along. Morons.

I saw an advert, cant think which newspaper, which showed basically a couple of 5L bleach containers stuffed on top of a bin with a load of other rubbish and the title report to the police if you see anything like this!

"these won't be used to make a bomb because a neighbour reported it"
i've seen it :|
Re: News - European Data Retention Directive comes into effect today
well to be fair who's gonna use *several 5 litre* containers of bleach for anything but a bomb?
I mean, apart from Michael Jackson's daily baths.

English would be nice.
If you are trying to say there is no connection at all, actually many things can be created out of simple freely available household goods.

They've been doing this for some time now. Nothing new. Did you not wonder how they caught some of the terrorists on the motorway just after the Glasgow airport bombing.
Having said that, I feel scared that this country will lie down and accept anything that is said to protect us from terrorism. We all just lie back and allow the government to do what they will.
Society in general is now always looking for direction from someone else and not standing up for themselves nor taking responsibility for themselves. This way it makes it easier to blame someone else when things go wrong. #excuse while I step off my soapbox#
p.s. Mr Brown, sir, if you're reading this any time over the next year then I must let you know how much I respect you and your work for us.
:yucky:

That's the point, if you start turning over every rock to look for bombs, you suddenly start seeing bombs *everywhere*. The government needs to stop viewing the people as the enemy and get back on track to what its suppose to do.
