Re: News - SCAN launches innovative component installation insurance
I have no idea if these are standard on most computer parts but LOL!!
Quote:
4 GENERAL EXCLUSIONS
1 Any legal liability directly or indirectly caused by or contributed to or
arising from:
a. ionising radiations or contamination by radioactivity from any
nuclear fuel or from any nuclear waste from the combustion of
nuclear fuel.
b. the radioactive, toxic, explosive or other hazardous properties of any
explosive nuclear assembly or nuclear component thereof.
2. Any damage or liability directly or indirectly occasioned by, happening
through or in consequence of war, invasion, acts of foreign enemies,
hostilities (whether war be declared or not), civil war, rebellion,
revolution, insurrection, military or usurped power, or confiscation or
nationalisation or requisition or destruction of or damage to property by or
under the order of any government or public or local authority.
3 Any damage directly occasioned by pressure waves caused by aircraft and
other aerial devices travelling at sonic or supersonic speeds.
So when my house gets bombed and my new components gets vapourised and everything is blown around by a jet plane and some terrorist comes along and stamps on the remains I wont be able to claim on this insurance!?!?! Want an absolute joke!!! ;)

10. Caused damage caused by You failing to follow the manufacturers
instructions
So for example when I got to put my new AM3 processor into my motherboard and I bend a pin i canny claim on this insurance but I could just say that it was damaged in transist / DOA and still get the refund...?

Isn't breaking the component a failure of following the manufacturers instructions?

I think it could be.
This is were I am a bit confused by this insurance...
I buy
1 x HD 4890
1 x waterblock for the card
I have invalidated the manufactures warranty by taking off the stock cooler. I set up my watercooling but there is a leak, the card is broken.
Now then...

3. EXCLUSIONS
This insurance does not cover:
4. Any action which invalidates the manufacturer’s warranty.
but...

Scansure is not extended warranty; it is specialized protection against accidental damage (including water damage) to components during installation.
Would I get a refund?
The damage is by water but I have invalidated the manufactures warranty by taking off the stock cooler.
Re: News - SCAN launches innovative component installation insurance
Can't see the insurance being of any use at all! Waste of money.

It's mind boggling eh, good thing not many read the policy page.

Sure is. My brain is starting to hurt now.

Im trying to think of a situation where it could be.
Static killing a component...? Though it has never happened to me or any of my friends who have built their own computers.
Fall out from your home made nuclear power plant damages your RAM...? Oh wait that isnt covered. Darn!

From what I remember, certainly of reading Intel warranty details, that's not necessarily the case. Using a different cooler, or overclocking, doesn't invalidate the warranty necessarily. It certainly doesn't invalidate your statutory rights.
But if either using another cooler or clocking contributed to the reason why the processor failed, then you'd be in a dodgy position both re: warranty and statutory rights. But you should be fine if, for instance, it turned out there was a batch defect with a given batch of chips, even if you'd clocked it or watercooled it.
Of more interest to me would be whether you'd be covered if you, for instance, put a heatsink on with too much or too little thermal paste and it caused problems. Or if you goofed applying a cooler and crushed the core?
What about if you tripped and snapped your brand new 4870X2 in half? Presumably, as an accident, that would be covered. But what if you broke it trying to fit it into a slot?
If you've bought expensive components like that video board, a small extra premium that covers you if you have an accident while fitting it might well be regarded as a trivial price to pay for peace of mind. But personally, I'd prefer a bit more clarification on what is, and isn't, covered, because it isn't just what exclusion clauses say, but precisely how they're interpreted.
Re: News - SCAN launches innovative component installation insurance
Seems like all publicity isn't always good publicity. :P
Think this one might need a Scan representative to give some clear examples as to what it's actually useful for.
A water-cooled system out of warranty where the enthusiast customer buys an updated graphics card... I'd imagine very few set ups fall into that category.
I'm also disappointed that it's opt out rather than opt in. Stupid as it may be, but once I've got to the checkout, I just assume the total is what I pay and from there on go about entering or confirming my details. What I don't expect is a charge to be added after that. Actually I'd be bloody angry.
It's not as if it's not splashed across the rest of the site as it is...

So it's an insurance policy for the clumsy then? :heckle:
Ah well I build my PC on the floor there's no chance of anything dropping and breaking unless the floor caves in :D

Well, your floor might not cave in, but if your wife/Mum/dog walk in and walk all over your new video board, 'cos you put it down (on the floor) for a couple of moments ...... ? :D
They're more likely to tread on it if you build on the floor than if you build on a counter top. ;)

Which is why I build late at night when no ones awake
Anyway the room is full of pc parts so if I'm not in the room my family never go in as they've got nothing of interest to see here

Well, ditto.
But I'm sure I read somewhere that once you deselect, it remembers that you deselected.
If you had to remember to do that every time, it'd annoy me badly, but if it;'s a one-time thing to set your default preference, then I don't see a problem. And the charge is pretty clearly displayed where you're not likely to miss it.
But in general, I find automatic inclusion of extra charges very presumptuous. I had a fairly large row with my motor insurance broker over this. I asked for a quote for a car policy, was given a price, paid and when the [policy arrived, it turned out they'd added optional legal protection cover for fees chasing things like recovering the excess. I then had to make several phones calls getting them to actually make the refund they agreed to make.
Had they bothered to tell me they were including this, or better yet, asked, I might have agreed. But they just presumed I wanted it.
So I changed insurers the following year, and bought a policy online .... having DESELECTED that cover with that company. Having bought it, I rang the company about a query, and the rep asked I knew I'd not got that cover, and I said yes, and I didn't want it.
So she asked if I understood whayt it was for, and can she tell me about it. I said no, I know what it's for and don'tr want it. She tried a further THREE times saying "Can I just explain what it's for ...."
Well sorry, but I'm not a total idiot. When she's ALREADY been told I know what it's for, don't want it, and don't want it explained to me because I already understand it, and she persists three more times, it's an insult to my intelligence and I'm going to lose my temper. And did. ;)
At least Scan make it clear they're adding it in, rather than just deciding for you, adding it on and billing you without the courtesy of letting me make my own mind up if I want to buy it or not.

Is this when you are logged in, so your account rememberes? or is it a cookie?
Cos that is really going to annoy me if it's the latter.
