Let's say you own the source code to Funkstar Deluxe. Versions 1.0 -> 5.0 are closed source, under a Windowsy EULA. Version 6.0 is released under a EULA - but you also publish most of the source code under a Free license as Funkstar Open Edition. You can go closed-only again for Funkstar Deluxe 7.0. You can't revoke the freedoms you assigned to 6.0 Open Edition, but it may well end up on en evolutionary dead-end path. Equally, of course, it could take over & become bigger than the original. You never know.
