complete overkill as far as i can see..

1GB is the most anyone would recommend now.

chips are better optimised to handle more memory now but certainly not 1.7GB optimised.

Low end chips, 256MB
Mid end chips, 512MB
Mid-high end, 512-1GB
High End, 1GB
Ultra High End (multiple chip design), 2GB..

Period..

anymore in any class will be money badly spent...

I agree, maybe this is to capture some of the misinformed people that think the more RAM a graphics card has the faster it is, regardless of GPU or Architecture!
