It's twice as fast, full DX11 capable, uses the new 40nm process.. how much more groundbreaking do you want?

Its all rumours but good to know a rough idea of dates and specs and that ATI is on the war path and keeping the heat on Nvidia.

If this is so much more powerful than current cards, what are the chances of an under clocked version with a low profile passive cooler that is roughly equivalent to current high end cards?

I expect they'll do a new version of the 4770 with the new dx11 shaders.

Re: News - ATI Radeon HD 5870 hits the rumour mill

what i meant was compared with the GT300 rumours which are promising the start of a shift towards cGPU this is nothing particualy stunning.

i0D posted this link in this thread.

Dropping to 40nm, great might see some cooler faster chips with better power and maybe cheaper? doesnt make a huge difference to the actual cards progression though, just facilitates it.

First DX11 chip ok il give you that but from the specs it seems to be pretty much just an upgraded 4 series architecture. Guess we will have to wait and see to know for sure.

    zip-zero-none

Your under-powered version is the 4770.. well, I guess when the 4750 hits it could have passive coolers.

The speculation seems like a huge jump over a pretty short period of time.. I guess, as has been said above, ATi wants to be aggressive and reclaim that ultra-reputable "best enthusiast GPU" crown.

Erm, cGPU.. because even cheap-as-chips CPUs aren't overpowered these days. Until nvidia can sell you one chip to do both gpu and cpu work, their innovation is just as incremental, if not less so, as ATi pushing graphical power forward.

Standard tick-tock development cycle though. On the Tick you change the architecture and tweek the process. On the Tock you tweek the architecture and change the process.

Intel have been very open about this all through the life of Core2 and on to i7 and i5.

I want ATI to continue whipping Nvidia in the low power usage stakes..

    Low Power Consumption
    *AND*
    Great Performance

Has that continued to really apply in the graphics cards world?

Which part of ATIs has been the tick and tock with their 2 3 and 4 series?

Sorry to ask a lot of explanation but i was under the impression that was just Intel's way of looking at it.

I thought the 4 series ATI cards where only better power consumption than the GTX series when you dont count idle power.... which in my book is a bit silly

I couldn't say for sure, I don't pay that close attention to the graphics card market. I think Intel are known for it, but it is common practise in many other companies, product sectors and markets. They might not call it tick-tock, but you will have an evolutionary step and then a revolutionary step. The second will be in development while the first is also in progress.

4670 has awesome idle and load power figures compared to Nvidia...

BTW, details leaking of 5850 models too. Found this by accident....

But isnt that compared to the 9600GT which is considerably faster?

I dont tend to follow the mid-low market too much in all fairness i tend to stick to the higher and lower (htpc style).
