    Cool.

Question: Im thinking of doing a clean install next week of the first version of Vista. Will I need to install SP1 then SP2 on top, or can I skip SP1 and just install SP2?

Re: News - Microsoft deploys Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Unlike previous Service Packs from MS, you need to have SP1 installed.

This blog post from Kevin Remde explains it I think:

Re: News - Microsoft deploys Windows Vista Service Pack 2

yup. You could quite happily install a vanila Windows 2000 then jump straight to SP6.

Or XP and jump straight to SP3.

But becuase of the changes made in Vista SP1, you need that installed before SP2. If there was to be a SP3, you would just need SP1 on there, you shouldn't need SP2 as well (unless they have made more changes to the update layer, but I don't think they have).

Not quite true, SP3 requires at least SP1 installed. Yes there are still systems out there that have XP RTM recovery media...

    Really?

I know I've done basic XP to SP2 without issue, though I haven't done it for SP3, so I'm surprised at that.

Not really a good idea to do an in-place upgrade with a new OS in the first place though.

Vista was a real disappointment. I'm still using XP and I will not be moving to Windows 7.

Re: News - Microsoft deploys Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Windows 7 is looking very good, I grabbed the RC and even though i'm running ancient hardware I cant tell any difference between xp and 7 in terms of speed. Also nice to have free software for a good few months anyway!
