Not looking quite so white and shiny anymore, is it? Methinks I might make sure mine is un-plugged at night from here on!
Suppose it's better the power connector than the battery exploding and taking the house with it.

Is it asking so very much for Apple to come up with a rodent-proof power adapter? I realise they produce aesthetically pleasing products but they are prone to ignoring practicalities aren't they?

The damn thing has gnawed through my 25m Cat-5e cable before aswell... >.< i was fuming
The wire isn't protected at the point where it enters the connector*. As such all of the flexing occurs in the same place. That causes metal fatigue and the same with the insulation, until the above happens.
*Well, not protected enough IMO.

It's a bloody brilliant and ingenious connector, the vast majority of people have used theirs faultlessly no doubt, obviously the problematic ones only ever come to light.
It is so useful, and the amount of times my laptop has been saved by the connector is a lot.
I haven't read about any further problems since the initial batch, so it would be interesting to see what caused the fire, whether it was magnetic interference or what. But come on, leaving a laptop plugged in over night is not a clever thing to do in anyones book is it?

Im not douting the ingeniousness of it but the fact they have a 1 star rating on the apple store and both i and my housemate have both had problems... then this guy has had this burning event.
I know at least 2 other people who have had issues with them aswell.
Why exactly shouldnt you be able to leave a laptop charging overnight...? seems like something which should be perfectly plausible to me
I've had 2 Magsafes "blow up" on my..although tbh the term "blow up" is way OTT..they both just melted and sort of went "fizzbtsfdzzz" lol..
Had one that looked like the photo above (although no damage to my macbook), and one where it happened at the other end - where the thin bit of "last mile" cabling connects to the main brick.
In both cases I took it straight to Apple who replaced without any argument..if I had been in the USA I would have sued them for it (or if I had been injured from it..almost sadly I was not..), but in reality there was very little danger. The adapter's own safety systems shut it down immediately once there was a problem, and despite lying on a pile of paperwork there was no fire etc.
Still, it shouldn't happen..
my current one is now starting to dieas a hint for everyone you can tell its going to die because the LED stays green but is dimer than usual.
Why on earth is the power connector having such levels of heat? Why is there power diserpating accross it?! That is a serious design flaw.
Indeed, this is what amazed me about the batteries one, why don't people have thyristors there?!
With this, it shows the power been used by these laptops, espesually when charging the battery, how can a brick tell a normal drain vrs a the mag connector shorting.
I've seen this happen on a dell before now, nothing like as bad as that before the system cut itself out. The soldering on the socket wasn't nearly strong enough to hold it to the motherboard, it had managed to work loose, with a screw that shouldn't of ever been loose their (somehow i blame my friend for that, he is the type to take things appart and be 'missing' a few bits!). It shorted out and there was a tiny little bit of damage, like someone had held the iron there a little too long.
To me its quite worrying that people are making design choices without thinking about consiquences of safety. What would happen if you put some bluetack or something a few mm thick, to just prevent the mag connector snugly fitting i wounder......

I haven't had any issues with my magsafe. Did have an issue with the previous generation PowerBook G4 power connection though. It stopped working and an orange blinking light was in the power cable (it had frayed internally) just before the connector. Luckily it was the week before the warranty expired.
For the magsafe I'd have to agree with muddyfox, it really can save you.
