    "What we'd like to see is GPU-based decoding of certain high-definition codecs, as provided by MPC-HC, for example. Anyway, let us know what you think of v1.0.0."

    What more is there to say? Without GPU-based hardware acceleration its one big fail for me...

    I agree MPC + K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (it now includes HC) is my main player.

    VLC makes an excellent backup though.

    Too bad they (VLC) removed the ability to extract a clip from a DVD (although you can still do the whole DVD).

    Re: News - VLC Player hits v1.0.0 milestone; adds new features

    I like that they added a frame-by-frame advance option (I remember them saying before that it was too much hassle to add due to the design of VLC), and I'm also hoping it fixes some mkv/ass subtitle issues I've been having.

    I've preferred to use Quicktime (+ perian & flip4mac) for a while now due to its interface and features, but I'm looking forward to giving VLC another go.

    Unless of course you want to use 5.1 digital output. I have to use Zoom Player or MPC for that.

    I like VLC because it just plays anything you throw at it without hunting for codecs, plus it's open source which is always a good thing. It may not be perfect for home theatre but I don't use it for that myself. 5/5!

    Re: News - VLC Player hits v1.0.0 milestone; adds new features

    I don't actually see why this is better than MPC. MPC is just faster and quicker reponse, better UI (simple but powerful), comes in x64 (with a pack of x64 codecs), GPU-Accelleration and it's outright very efficient.

    I have to use VLC on the Mac, it's all good and cool but I much rather prefer using MPC-HC on Windows.

    never liked VLC, didn't like the way the GUI worked, or being unable to skip eps with mouse buttons left and right, or volume with mouse..MPC is just perfect for everything i've ever had to do
    and codecs are not exactly a big deal, you install em once and thats it

    Re: News - VLC Player hits v1.0.0 milestone; adds new features

    I've used VLC for many years now. It's very handy to have, has lots of features for networking and streaming content. Alas, its UI has always felt a bit rubbish. And now that MythTV is pretty good at playing the content I throw at it, I tend not to use it very often.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Re: News - VLC Player hits v1.0.0 milestone; adds new features

    VLC has always been a bit of a Swiss Army Knife application in my book... it doesn't really win in any category. It uses more resources than others, it doesn't have all the useful features that others do, it doesn't have the best GUI.

    But, I have never come across an application as simple and useful - I always have it on a USB stick so if I'm somewhere and WMP or whatever refuses to load a video or DVD, I can just load up VLC and everything carries on as it should. No installations, no codecs, no messing - it just works. And that's worth a lot.

    Except when it doesn't. To be fair, the instances are very rare, but MPC + CCCP is more or less all I need (at most throw in Real/Quicktime Alternative, but I hardly ever run into a file that needs those). I do agree that that it's a bit of a Swiss Army knife, which isn't a bad thing sometime.

    Am also a big fan and user of VLC. I initially got it for easy .mkv playback, but now use it for everything, on both Ubuntu and XP.
    I'd like to give 1.0 a try, see what the improvements are.
