They keep dropping flyers through my door for fibre optic broadband so i rang them to switch from ADSL and they said im not in a cable area????

Well I have to say you're all very unlucky, I'm on a 10Mb Virgin line and I get 10Mb. If you're getting 1Mb then either something is very broken or you've breached the Acceptable Usage Policy and they've temporarily dropped you to a lower speed.

Now that 50Mb lines are here can they still call it 'next generation'? Surely it's now 'current generation'? Star Trek: TNG should be renamed Star Trek: The Generation Before DS9, Voyager and Enterprise.

As its my backup line that I hardly use it, I used to get 2Mb/s at all times from my 2Mb/s line now I am on 10Mb/s I get less than 1Mb/s

i'm FORCED to use Virgin Media, the joys of an awful copper line. i get 10meg on my 10meg line, but throttling is AWFUL at times

I must be one of the "lucky" ones as my VM 10meg service is pretty faultless. Yes it's slightly less responsive at peak times, but that is to be expected. We're paying for a contended service. Yes the STM cap can occassionally get annoying, but something has to be done about the muppets that think they can constantly leech their connection flat out 24/7. Besides, it's not that hard to avoid downloading a ton of stuff during peak hours, just schedule it for later.

Other than that, my connection is pretty damn quick and is perfectly stable.

That upload speed trial sounds interesting, and appealling.

I'm thinking of dropping VM altogether, for the last 4 months they have screwed up our bill and are still charging us for the TV we cancelled 5 months ago and they even came to pick the bloody box up so how the hell!!!

Thing is I like downloading and I'm at least 5 miles from the local exchange so ADSL for me screams poop.

Could always get the old man to sign upto VM with the 10Mb package (we always get decent speeds from VM as the box is actually at the end of my frint drive) for the new customer price seeing as he lives next door.

Yep my 10mb is great as well (especially when thinking back to the bad old days of adsl - shivers)

Due to the lack of decent broadband in my area i'd go for Virgin if i could.

I'd get the 50mb line but even if i was on the 20mb i wouldn't care about the throttling. 25% of 20mb is 5mb which is about what i get here on a decent day.

i get better pings on my dads adsl than i did on virgin cable and back here im MUCH further from the exchange! My problem was overcrowded cabinets... i think. Speeds always used to drop to worse than dial up during 4-6pm but between 9pm till 4pm the next day i would generally get the max speed.

My way around any throttling, stupid as it may sound, is just to limit my downloads to 1/3 of their max speed peak hours and then 3/4 or 4/5 max speed over night. Might only really work with the aquiss system thouggh as they use a 'black mark' thing which i have never really got my head around.

If im in the area for it when i move out i will definately be buying into the better uploads... i hate the insanely inbalanced speeds, drives me nutz!
