It's just a shame that some of these companies that apparently cater for "all diy pc" enthusiasts don't cater for the smaller shuttle cases xD
I can barely fit an 8800GTS in mine let alone a GTX

That 4890 has a 6pin and an 8pin power connector - the 4890s are only meant to have 2x6-pin? Does this mean it's actually more like a 4890x2... (please say yes)

No. Its just like the Gainward 4850 cards that have 2x6 pins i think, probably due to the overclock they had at stock and what you could possibly achieve with them.

I think it looks pretty slick myself and the deisgn isnt only for aesthetic purpose, apparently it helps channel air over the card and cool it more efficiently.

Wow, actually found a picture of a 4890 with an 8-pin + 6-pin:
here
Out the box, it's clocked at 900Mhz which is at the high end of 4890, but nothing spectacular. Doesn't help when you're building a crunching box and it doesn't say this info on the site you're buying it from, and you're assuming all 4890s have 2x6-pin.
