lol let's see what happens if this goes ahead. I would bet £54.99 at William Hill that we see a mass serge in piracy and mod chips being sold

and then they will complain when the game is pirated.
£55 for a game that you may or may not like, is utter madness and (IMO) an exploitation of the younger age groups who will impulse buy things like this.
Main PC: Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 3960X@4.5GHz / Antec H1200 Pro / 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel / Sapphire Fury X / Areca 1680 / 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold 2 / Corsair 600T / 2x Dell 3007 / 4 x 250GB SSD + 2 x 80GB SSD / 4 x 1TB HDD (RAID 10) / Windows 10 Pro, Yosemite & Ubuntu

I wonder if the likes of LoveFilm and Blockbusters will make a lot more sales on game rentals.

What I find funny....
If we assume that on a £40 game, "costs" (Before margins of retail, distributor etc...) is...
£20. So 30% on that is... £6
£30 (too high in reality to allow for everyones margins on a £40 game), so 30% on that is... £9
£40 (impossible), 30% = £12.
So £15 increase?
I think someone is having a right laugh.
Complete madness.
What's the bet that if it comes to pass, the games with it won't have demos, or won't demo the features that people will actually buy the game for? - the demo for Modern Warfare lacked multiplayer.
Is this really that much of an issue? With competition among the (online) shops being what it is, you will never pay full whack for a new game (unless you are buying the Super Duper I Have More Money Than Sense Edition) Play already have COD:MW2 for £44.99 for the consoles. As long as people are willing to shop around there is no need to be paying full whack.
You'd still be looking at a hike in prices anyway though. Those that are cheap now will still need a £10 - £15 price rise.
Would be interesting to know if this is going to be for the PC aswell. Does smack a little of ripoff though and at times when they need to be fighting piracy not a wise move.
I won't buy any games for my 360 for anything close to those prices.
The most I have paid for a PC game is around £30 and I tend to rarely spend above £20 to £25 usually. If the games start massively increasing in price then I am either going to wait a long time until they drop down massively in price or even stop playing new games altogether TBH!!
One of the main reasons behind upgrading my PC periodically is for gaming and if the cost of the games is too high it will mean I will probably also not upgrade my PC as often as I used to. Even a relatively cheap PC nowadays is quite powerful and will do the job for most other things outside of hardcore video and rendering work and will do so for at least three to four years with minor upgrades. Gaming is not essential for most people anyway. I suppose it will mean I can save some more money!
Edit!!
Maybe this is part of a secret government conspiracy to get more kids off their bums and doing exercise....hmmmmm....??!!

People could learn to be a little more patient then, and wait for the inevitable price drops.
The publishers will get the idea one way or another - there just won't be enough people who will buy a game at that price.
The less they sell straight away the quicker the price will drop and they'll end up in the bargin bins before too long
we'll all start trawling the Jan sales with the women.
I agree with all these sentiments. The only game i've recently bought was COD5, due to the half price offer on steam. But how many people are that patient? Not many, and with the sheep out there who think nothing of giving EA (that's all their sport series then, especially FIFA) their money when yet another yearly sequel is released then the games industry will know just how much they can ask with lots of people willing to pay.
The COD series now has to be added to the yearly updates since the massive success of MW all they will think of now is the $£€ and in the current economic problems, who can blame them?
With the strength of the Euro I'm not surprised at all. Time to buy British
Its been said already, but wont this lead to higher levels in piracy. They want to stop piracy then they need to be reducing the price of games. Not forgetting that games that are coming out need to be longer and just better in general. If there is an absolutely amazing game comes out that is worth 50 notes then so be it I pay for it. If they are charging that though for an average or above average game I wait off till its pre owned or on one of the many 2 for however much offers.
As gamers we shouldnt be forced to pay that kind of money for a new title that has a high profile. It would be like charging twice as much for a cinema ticket for say the new Harry Potter movie regardless of how good or bad it is, charge x amount just because of the name.
Xbox 360 games are already RRP £49.99, this is a mere £5 price increase on that figure. The main article and a lot of the comments are misleading comparing the £54.99 that Activision are talking about to the 'standard retail price' of £39.99, it won't be like that at all. I'm thinking we can still expect the lowest launch price to be something down the lines of £37.99, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

Just a quick question to start with - I preordered COD: MW2 with gamestation but I haven't paid yet. If I were to order from game or play from the net I would only have to pay the price at the time of ordering but how much will I end up paying? Thanks
I agree with what everyone is saying, and if games started costing £55 on consoles I would wait a while for them to drop a fair bit or get one preowned - no way I'm paying that much but like McPhee said don't forget games are now RRP 49.99 so they should 'only' be 44.99 after the increase. I know consoles make money from the games but they are getting just too expensive now, and for whoever asked, Cod 4 and a bit is £29.99!!! on PC.
