Edit: You forgot to mention that USB 3.0 will increase (double, I believe) the amount of power available. More devices like hard drives, especially mobile ones, shouldn't need external power supplies to operate.

Looking forward to USB 3 aswell, although I really wish that eSATA could deliver power aswell!

Great summary article. I thought eSATA *could be* (but usually isn't) powered (please enlighten me if I'm wrong). It really only makes sense if powered so is a shame so few motherboards have it, have so few eSATA connectors and/or have unpowered connectors - the standard could have taken off so much more by now. Also, I gather it can be (but often isn't) configured to be hot-swappable. Again, lack of support for this feature doesn't help the standard. I have a few sizeable portable HDDs but USB 2.0 is pretty slow when I have to connect by this method and I can't always be ars3d to reboot just to get the SATA connection working with them. If anyone knows of any decent PCIe add-in cards with 2-4 powered, hot-swappable eSATA ports, pls let me know!
