Didn't notice, but then I got bored of it so quickly I'm afraid, just like Myspace & Farcebook. More to life...
Personally I don't get twitter and did have a smile on my face when I saw the bbc story just now.....
I just do not get it.......what's wrong with websites, text messages, emails, forums and blogs (another small hate of mine!) that you feel the need for another communications medium? And to top it, it only supports short messages!
It screams "attention whore" when you can't have your breakfast or take the dog for a walk without %^&*(" tweeting it.
I use Twitter, but I get really pissed off with the "attention whores" that you refer to, the ones that tell you that they are currently at work, that they have completed a programing module, that they are going to the toilet, that they are going to lunch at the following co-ordinates and would anyone like to join them....
If someone fits into that catagory I usually unfollow them within a day.
It is useful, and interesting, but I find myself submitting to these forums more often than I tweet (as I am more likely to get feedback).
In fact that is the primary problem I have with mordern social networking, the lack of feedback on systems like Bebo, Facebook, etc.... I like forums though, but they tend to limit my scope of contact.
I think twitter is great but not for the average joe. It\'s more like big companies that would need to communicate something to the outside world in an instant.
Like O2 did recently when their network went down. Couple of minutes later O2 updated their status on twitter to something like "we are aware of the problem and trying to fix it". In that respect it is great.
And obviously in situations like Iran where it was very helpful in getting the view from the streets as to what is happening.
I\'ve still never even visited twitter.. I have no idea what it\'s purpose is.. and I really don\'t care to know.
As above I see no point to the errr.. service.. it offers. I\'m constantly amazed thatsome of the most stupid ideas generate so much attention not to mention money..
 Don't get me wrong - I don't sit there on Twitter on just check random statuses (sp?) because I don't, infact I've never visited the homepage. But it is a useful tool for communicating to large audience instantly.
Now MySpace can die altogther.
Facebook is great for arrange get togethers but thats about it.
Not really knowing what it actually does.. I'm going to take a swing at this.
Twitter is like a megaphone for the internet?
I will just have to head down the pub to protect my mental health
actually I was going down there anyway :)
Errrr you could put it like that yes. It's more like blogging and facebook status updates mashed up.
Incredibly useful for big companies, corporations that have customers world wide. But completely useless to me (in regards to actually signing up and stuff).
Twitter is incredibly useful to some (like myself) and I really don't understand why people would want to hate upon it, etc? It isn't imprinted to the underneath of your eyelids, no one forces you upon it!
Also a lot of the people who have negative things to say have never used it (like that Archbishop chap) or have registered, posted up a status like 'doing some laundry' and left complaining it's crap.... but no one cares if any old person is doing their laundry and people are missing the point!
I myself hesitated registering but I thought I would just take the dive a few months back... it was a slow start but now that the ball is rolling its my top social site, and myspace is virtually non-existent to me now.
Twitter is primarily a communication device, think of it like the new Facebook but with no further detail to your profile apart from the bio/location/profile pic you put up. This way you can communicate to pure strangers and openly discuss anything (like this hexus forum, lol) and it's not as intrusive or significant as private messaging (although it does have an alternative PM service but the people have to be following each other).
It's an open domain that allows you to see what the world thinks on anything (such as trending topics) and network, and because of this it's the quickest news tool. I found out about the Michael Jackson death etc etc on Twitter first. It's a platform for open conversation where anyone can join in.
If you have a decent phone, you can load up a really good twitter app (like Ubertwitter) and its a good way to pass the time to see what friends and people are talking about and doing, as well as actively communicating to everyone through it. A good example is when that guy was on the aircraft crash in the middle of new york and posted up a picture directly from his blackberry as they were being rescued.
Twitter is NOT for everyone, but for anyone that enjoys it or finds it useful etc, it's great so I think people who are being negative are just being old miserable farts. They're the ones missing out, not me
No, twitter is like that annoying ass brother of a friend that somehow got your mobile number and accidentally sends you incomprehensibly broken messages, vaguely resembling what he wants to do with his junk with his slutty girlfriend.
Wanna know what happened when twitter went down?.. Absolutely nothing. The tubes kept flowing (probably better in fact), the planet kept spinning, the Sun kept fusing, and pulling the earth around it. And with any luck, people's spelling radically improved for an hour.
