well the storage component of any virtualisation project is critical - I've seen first hand the effects of what can happen when its just assumed that storage will work.
Re: Analysis - Virtualisation is key growth market during recession
I thought it was key growth market before the recession to be honest.
Re: Analysis - Virtualisation is key growth market during recession
It was, just with the recession power savings and data centre consolidations have become a focus for a lot of companies.
I've been landed with the job of virtualising our entire production SQL Server environment at the moment, something that 6-12 months ago no one here would ever have contemplated.

good challenge ! :)
just make sure you get the storage right!! , if you've got your SQL drives on SAN already its a lot easier as you could just present the drives to the VM's as RDM's
Re: Analysis - Virtualisation is key growth market during recession
Yes, about 75% of our databases are spread across various SANs, so even the migration plan is starting to look surprisingly simple :)
Re: Analysis - Virtualisation is key growth market during recession
very - p2v the OS portion of the VM , shut down physical , rezone SAN and present other drives , boot up virtual , eat cake :)
Re: Analysis - Virtualisation is key growth market during recession
Planning to build the VMs (including SQL with a copy of master restored), detach databases from physical, present the SAN LUNs to the VMs and re-attach the dbs to the VM....then rename the servers.
Don't really want to get into P2V during a change window :P
Re: Analysis - Virtualisation is key growth market during recession
that would work just as well and you'll have the advantage of a cliean built Server. only snag that comes to mind is if your system dbs are on the SAN as well.
