I've already got a PS3, a 360, a Wii, a Sky box and a surround sound system under my telly. Where do you suggest I put the PS2? There's only so much room

Thats not Sony's problem thats yours mate. plus the PS2 is what? same size as a wii and you cant fit that along your current setup? Again thats your issue you need to deal with if you want to play PS2 games.

maybes it is his problem but im sure he isnt the only one who is a bit miffed. I dont understand why people think its a good thing to make things less compatible. Ok fair enough if something is released without backwards compatability because it would make the hardware more complicated... but when its fully capable it just seems a pointless thing to do. Its as if Sony are just trying to annoy their customers.

So you rather sony annoy their customers selling the ps3's for more than £400+ like the old backward compatible ps3's?

the backwards compatability can be software based... so there is no need for them to cost an extra 150 is there

Thing is though PS3 has not got a massive catalouge of games when compared to the 360 or PC.

For someone who has just shelled out £250+ for a PS3 it seems cheeky to ask me for another £40 to play older games. And as with 360 Arcade games. People do play old games.

Sony may have been able to sell simliar downloads.

And £40 may not seem like much to you, but to some people it is a lot to fork out for. Especially with other consoles on the market offering cheaper hardware with a massive catalouge of games.

I know MS bodged up on the 360 hardware. But at least they were good to their customers and replaced them. Sony seem to taking the mickey.

Re: News - PS3 backwards compatibility gone for good

when the PS3 first came out I was happy that it has backwards compatibility with all playstation consoles. yet later on they took it out=( I was quite annoyed when I brought my ps3 a few months ago.
Im glad i can play ps1 games thou. i ran out of space on ps1 memory cards so now i can play some classics again such as crash bandicoot etc.
maybe ps4 will have ps2 backwards compatiblity? maybe by then it wont cost as much?
ps4 will be based on ps3 so wont cost as much.

I used to have a gamecube in my living room now its replaced by a wii which plays gamecube games.

ive had my ps2 since lanch date and its a great console. its over 9 year old tech I dont know why it adds so much cost to the ps3.

So where did people play their original ps2 games then? And is the xbox live arcade games free? Also does the 360 play xbox 1 games? What about the wii? can that play gamecube games?

Re: News - PS3 backwards compatibility gone for good

The Sony exec is confident that because the console has a “substantial” line-up of gaming titles and Blu-ray support, no one wants to play old PS2 games.
That's nice and all, but they cut off backwards compatibility long before this 'substantial' line-up. If anything, it's bad PR. I doubt the manufacturing cost for backward compatibility that significant. People who won't use it will not lose anything significant. For people who would rather want it (and yes, space is an issue for some of us), this message can be interpreted as a 'We know better than you, suck it up'.

XBox360 -> Partial backward compatibility. Not too much unlike earlier PS3s (maybe worse - but at least it *looks* as they've tried).
    Wii -> Yes.

I sold mine after I bought my PS3? LOL

Guys, you can always use PS2 emulator on PC, namely PCSX2. It is pretty impressive these days. Just fiddle around a bit with the plugins for a few mins. and you are up and running! My younger bro plays FFX this way

Meh, they say this. But I reckon further on down the line they will feel the pain of shooting themselves in the foot, and re-release the PS3 with hardware BC. Cause lets face it, the PS3 games catalogue hasn't got **** on the PS2 games catalogue.

Jax & Daxter, Rachet & Clank, God of War 1 & 2, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Prince of Persia series, Onimusha series.

Just to name some of the greats on the PS2.

You really think that MS have been good to their customers? Really? You must be taking the piss tbh. MS refused to admit that there was anything fundamentally wrong with the 360. Even with all the websites shouting at MS to fix their pile of ****. Did they do anything? Nope. Outside of warranty (1 Year) you was forced to pay £85 for the privilege of sending your console on a trip around Europe. They very begrudgingly decided to pay for the repairs out of their own pocket after 18 months. 18 months, you really think that is being good to your customers? Now if your 360 fails you have to wave goodbye for up to 2 weeks for a repair. Is this being good to your customers?

For all you cry babies out there, get over it, its not life changing. Before the PS2 backward compability wasn't even a word in the console market. Sony invented it. Nintendo had never released a console that was capable of doing this. MS screwed up their tech contract and forgot to sign the technology for the original Xbox, so they added software emulation (and that was pretty poor) which i believe has now been put on halt, so no more games will be added to the library.

Josh, your on a losing battle here. Easier to let the cry babies have their day.

Re: News - PS3 backwards compatibility gone for good

I guess the thinking is that the cost of adding PS2 compatibility (probably second only to adding BC to the Dreamcast for the Saturn) plus memory card adapter is greater than the cost of a PS2 or rather keeping the one you already have.

I'd have paid extra for it, but I think I am in the minority. If I wanted it that badly I could have bought a 60GB. In the end I bought a spider cable and fished out a 8 ended cable. Now if I want to play my PS2, Dreamcast or Xbox, I can from one 'hotseat'. Wish I could get a SNES etc cable too.

Also on the PS3 having no exclusives 'you' want, well that's very subjective. Personally I enjoyed playing through R&C, Uncharted, MGS4 and Valkyria Chronicles. Where as you may not. Personally I'd like my time back from trying to enjoy the Halo games. Then again I feel the same about many Sony stallwarts as well; GT, Final Fantasy, GoW etc.

It's about looking for the console that does what you want, buying it and being happy that others enjoy what ever game they are playing on what ever system. It's not some religion or football match where someone has to 'win'.

FYI I own the following consoles: Dreamcast, DS, Xbox, PS2, PS3, Gameboy Micro. I plan on getting an Elite after the price drop as I currently borrow my mates 360.

I have owned: Gamecube, PS1, Lynx, Master System.

Re: News - PS3 backwards compatibility gone for good

Sony could have made PS3 like PS2 only more powerfull and with new features. Kind of like a PC. Which face it Sony so much wish it could rival a PC. If anything, doing this besides adding backwards compatability with PS2 games it would at least have developers who are familiar with the architechture and could get the most of the hardware from day one.

GTA 4 on PS3 ran at a lower res than on the weaker aging 360.

Consoles are just not consoles any more.

    MS taking the p**s?
At least MS are learning from it and buying their console is way better value for money than Sony.

But you know what is the funnyest thing of all?

TO FIX ALL THE CRAPPY THINGS THAT IS WRONG WITH THESE CONSOLES SONY AND MS WOULD STOP MAKING CONSOLES AND MAKE PCs.
