Standalone satnav devices are in trouble. The high-end devices are being eroded because their owners tend to also own a high-end smartphone - and at the low end, Tomtom's kit simply cannot compete on price with the wave of tat you find in any car bits or gadgets store
Yup, agree.
If I had an Apple iPhone I would have bought the TomTom app for it, rather than shell out the £150 on a standalone XL IQ European model.
I have a cheap tat satnav, when i upgrade my phone in 2 months i will be looking to get a satnav plugin for my new phone. (current phone has gps, just dont have the software)
At least they have updated their interface and map data. The Navigon and Navman interfaces have been far far nicer for a long time now.
Hey Funkstar,
what satnav do you have? if any
I agree the interface of navigon is nicer but the devices are less reliable. navman supply out of date map data and dont have an offer of a free map update. ive got a tomtom one XL 30 europe and its a great device. it will be interesting how much these new ones cost. at first i thought the tomtom and garmin maps looked a bit flat and hard to understand but i was wrong. tomtom's interface is fine but at somepoint i will get a newer one and an interface improvement is welcome.
a few weeks ago I checked the prices of the map update for my tomtom and it used to cost £35 for 4 maps a year. but now they want me to pay an extra £8.95 for a map update now and if I take either out of basket it takes out both.
much better than in car satnav prices thou. my mum's car nissan x-trail has got satnav. it was a free upgrade normalling costing £1300. it uses a dvd and last time i checked nissan wanted around £500 for one dvd.... thats the price of the high end tomtom
i hope tomtom strike more deals with car manufacturers the benefit of integrated car satnav aka no sucker marks on wind screen, bigger screen but with tomtom benefits such as lastest maps, quick gps fix and mapshare.

Just shelled out £25.99 for CoPilot Live 8 software for my WinMo phone, which included UK maps. It's excellent! As mentioned above, standalone sat navs are in trouble....!
We discuss that in the recently published Talking Shop with the makers of Stompy's software.
