Just need the transmissions to use them ;)
I was picking up the signal from Crystal Palace during the trial (which ended about a year ago IIRC) and it looked quite nice.....would be great if they rolled it out sooner as there are a number of people already with the trial set-top boxes or HTPCs with DVB-T2 cards.

I sit final yet what channels will be available. I know due to the bandwidth issue there are going to only be like 5 channels available in HD. Not sure if this has changed since I last read up on it.
Anyhow, its good to see its moving along now and there is a date for roll outs.

What DVB-T2 tuners are there (USB or PCI). I'm keen to find one with Linux support :)
Re: News - First Freeview HD receivers on course for early 2010 launch
I've not heard of any yet, never mind ones with Linux support.
Correction: Google throws up one in the product search - http://www.leconcepts.com/products/v...-dvb-t2-2.html
Re: News - First Freeview HD receivers on course for early 2010 launch
Looks like it's a product with a name that happens to have a 2 at the end of it, rather than actually being a DVB-T2 tuner. They probably came up with it before the standard was drafted anyway.

Yeah could be, I didn't look too hard at it before :D
Re: News - First Freeview HD receivers on course for early 2010 launch
hmm i wonder what will be available , well if sky gets it's own way then not much thats anygood . i just hope they get rid of the trash channels (shopping/text based) to make this possible without hurting the rest thats bearly watchable
Re: News - First Freeview HD receivers on course for early 2010 launch
Will you need a dish or anything else special to get the HD channels?
Sorry if it's a silly question, not really sure how these things work. I have an old Humax PVR at the moment for upstairs and it's great but it's started playing up in the last few weeks, hopefully it will last a little while longer, at least until these are out.

No Trash Man you won't. The clue is in the name. DVB-T is terrestrial, i.e. standard ground-based transmission.
DVB-S is satellite, on which there are already HD broadcasts (including those encrypted by Sky).

Good to hear :) I did say it might be a silly question :)
Will the channels be full HD then?
Re: News - First Freeview HD receivers on course for early 2010 launch
Out of interest, we have a new Samsung B650 LCD TV - will that pick up Freeview HD straight away?
Re: News - First Freeview HD receivers on course for early 2010 launch
None of the current Freeview hardware will be able to receive the new HD transmissions as none of them are DVB-T2. As it is a hardware issue, a software or firmware upgrade isn't going to work either.
The only way screens will be upgradable is if they have a tuner module that can be replaced. Unlikely in most situations.
I would not expect FullHD over this, 1080i at the best I suspect. But more likely 720p I would think.
Just to be clear, Freeview isn't being upgraded to HD, they will be moving things around so that a single Multiplex (the transmission space of an old analogue channel) can be made DVB-T2 for a small number of channels. I would expect one from the 4 main networks, and perhaps one other from Sky or similar.

Looking good for me, I do live in the Granada region too.
As for what is broadcast, it can only increase with time, but I would be happy with BBC/ITV HD for the time being.
I was just looking at freesat for some HD but this will sort the problem.
What compression will it be using? will it be the same as now with higher res and bitrates or they going for a mpeg4 based system?
