I doubt we'll ever really need one though. I mean, the cost of making personalized medicine would be huge!

I wonder how much it will actually cost then when it becomes available for ordinary people who want to map their genome.
Jay,
I think that rather than making personalised medicine, it would just make it easier for doctors to prescribe certain drug combinations more specifically suited to a person's genetic strengths and weaknesses. Sort of in the same way you wouldn't prescribe penicillin to someone who was allergic... Doctors would be able to know whether certain drugs would or wouldn't have the desired effect based on what they knew from that person's genetic map.
ABCx86,
IBM's statement reckoned the cost for getting one's DNA checked would be anywhere between $100 and $1000. Even if that number reaches the high end of the estimate, it still seem pretty cheap, considering you'd be able to know your entire genetic makeup. Think of all the money you could save by practicing preventative medicine, if you were aware of what you were most susceptible to! But of course, we won't know the actual price until it really does become available... and that may not be for quite some time!
YAY for life insurance companies knowing if they should cover you or not
