Single-PCB card equipped with two GPUs, the lesser of which takes on PhysX responsibilities.

smacks of "holy crap we need to use up the stock and sell it somehow... Lets bolt this together and flog it"

Go have a look at what hardocp found out about nvidia's phyx from their batman article. ATI card with a phyx card did better than the NV card.

They should have kept selling AGEIA cards tbh and stuck with an open physics standard.

If you remove your green/red spectacles for a moment, this could be a logical step forward for all graphics cards to follow. With both AMD and NVidia claiming to embrace open source solutions for physics rendering I can't think of a better use for outgoing technology than to use it to supplement new generation solutions for the benefit of the consumer. If all graphics cards shipped with a 'standardised' physics chip I, for one, would be delighted!!!
