Didnt notice that the ps3 had such good cpu power, obviously this is let down by the performance of the gpu which is no where near to the scale of the cpu which seems a bit stupid :L.

They have a better FLOPS/W ratio, and they're easier to write compilers for.

And nobody was using the SPUs anyway, it's too complex and costly to run code on them in an optimal manner.

Naw, that's just the RSX GPU. The CPU itself is a PowerPC core with a bunch of MIPS chips wrapped around it.
Yeah sorry, I meant graphics-wise it ran on a 7800 chip. Does the Cell get involved in the graphics processing at all then? I seem to remember that each of the 7 cores was assigned to a different task.
From what I understand, the GPU does all the graphics processing, you'd do stuff like physics and AI on the SPUs while the PPC core does SPU thread monitoring, basic gameplay work, and light idle loops.
It just annoys me that the PS3 doesn't upscale properly.

Sorry, I own a PS3 but I know absolutely sod all about it. Although, that probably puts me in line with 99% of console owners.

you have enabled upscaling in the menu settings? works fine on my 60gb release model.
Yes. If your TV doesn't have a decent upscaler to compensate, you're shafted.
The cores can be used as graphical processors as the GPU itself isn't 'up to it' so to speak, i believe this is how they got Uncharted 2 to look so good. And by upscaling i think i know what you mean - for those that don't there isn't actually a scaling chip like the ANA/HANA one in the 360 (IIRC) so if your playing on a 1080p set your f#cked the majority of the time as the 720p image gets stretched, and suggestively looks kack, the post-processing in KZ2 covers up quite good though tbh.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
The cores still wont do any hardware rendering. You might do software tessellation (as part of a physics subsystem) in a few SPUs, but in practice almost nobody will bother doing that.
Oh right, I've only got a 720p TV so I've never noticed. It's kinda nice to know though, I had a feeling that I was missing out on some of the better PS3 graphics as a result of the screen res.
Man, this is gonna screw backwards compatibility even further right? I guess total software emulation for PS2 titles would be possible, but what about PS3 titles?
Also strange that they would go with PowerVR when they could continue their relationship with nVidia (seems they were pimping PhysX quite a lot for the PS3).
What happened to the rumours of Larrabee on PS4 (and a large amount of Intel $$ heading to Sony!!).
