Re: News - Google launches itself as DNS server
Thanks, but no thanks, I'd rather run my own DNS boxen, thanks all the same, Google.
Re: News - Google launches itself as DNS server
I use OpenDNS at the moment so I can filter websites, if Google offer the filtering I might give them a try unless someone knows a better free service :)

BIND. But that requires a server... somewhere. :P
Re: News - Google launches itself as DNS server
...and I would use this over OpenDNS why?

Because it's Google. My concern is however, that since illegal content can be indited to be removed from the Google search engine, Google will legally be forced to censor out the DNS records to illegal sites, which brings in the issue of net neutraility, the very issue they advocate. Google as my DNS? That's just a step to far.
Mail provider, Search Engine, Calander, Online Photos I can handle, but DNS? No.
Althrough 8.8.8.8 is easy to remember for diagnoistic purposes... so I will use it in some circumstances.
Re: News - Google launches itself as DNS server
I'd still have my own BIND over 3rd party DNS any day of the week.
Re: News - Google launches itself as DNS server
Good job on getting a nice easy to remember address: 8.8.8.8 !
I've just filed that away in my brain, and it will be used next time I'm fiddling ;)

Now, if only they would offer anonymous proxies so that we can access US DRMed content from the UK.....

Or better yet, why don't content companies realise that we live in a global ecomany and that the rest of the world deserves the content to!
Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

You need to forgive them, it took EA more than a decade to realise there is such thing as online distribution. This internet thingy is very confusing for corporate types.

I really need to start blogging, or something, just to write up a few idea. One of the things I've been thinking about is the future of content distribution and how it is going to affect the society as we know in terms of interlectual property, network strain, etc. How services like iPlayer will evolve, and what content providers and producers should do to embrace the current circumstances, rather than trying to hide from the fact with DRM and legal proceedings.
But sorry, I digress. :offtopic:

My sentiments exactly. However, my browsing experience did seem to be snappier FWIW. I am back to using my usual DNS though.
I wouldn't be surprised if some men in black had a direct feed to what people were accessing though. It's just far too creepy.

Yup, that's why I wouldn't trust anyone other than myself with my DNS requests. I don't mind falling back to my ISP DNS in case I have some niggles, but that'd be about it.

*tin foil hat*
Alot of people use Google services, does anyone actually know how much information they hold about us?
Google hold far too much information about people using any and all of their services.
Just look at Chrome and it's phoning home, or when you are signed in to you G-Account it keeps a record of what you search for, that kind of stuff.
Sleep walking into a Google controlled society! (ok that was just me poking fun).

Dare to be different ha?
I understand your sentiments, but the fact of the matter is, someone always has your information. You are just a record in thousands of indepenent databases. An intelligent man with the right resources can, and will, connect the dots if they need to be connected.
It's a side effect of the world we live in. Being different only makes those dots harder to connect, but never impossible.
