For me paying £400+ up front doesn't really appeal after an rather expensive Xmas.
I reckon the numbers would of been much higher if the phone was available directly from phone operators on monthly plans.
I guess the takeup will increase massively when operators do pick it up.
I'd certainly have one if T-mobile start offering them. Maybe a lesson to learn for the Nexus Two?

the droid being so good and not all that long ago probably hasn't helped

For me, that's got to be the overwhelming point. I know the US market is different and there is less subsidisation over there, but here, even if you buy the phone yourself, it is still quite difficult to get a decent tariff that takes that into account.
SIM free prices for these top smartphones are what, £400+. Over an 18 month contract you'd need to save £20pm on the tariff to make it worthwhile going sim free. When I've looked at contracts or even PAYG with decent data allowances, you can't get them £20 cheaper than the contracts with a "free" phone.

You need to also take into consideration it would appear that big chunk of those people are having problems with the Nexus one, and are being directed from Google to T-Mobile to HTC, i would think that has its repercussions as well.
Re: News - Google?s Nexus One may only have sold 20,000 in first week
I am going to wait until the Nexus 7 comes out as it should be more stable and last longer!! :p
Re: News - Google?s Nexus One may only have sold 20,000 in first week
My classmate got one. I couldn't see the point of it but well, he just wanted the fastest phone on the planet.
Re: News - Google?s Nexus One may only have sold 20,000 in first week
The only "unique" (ish) thing is has going for it is that this is a Google branded phone. Personally if I wanted a keyboardless smartphone I'd pick up an HTC HD 2 (ney Leo) - almost identical phone spec for spec, and comes with Windows Mobile with HTC Sense 2.5 running on top of it. Oh and you can run Android 2.1 Eclair on the Leo too, perfectly.
Spec for spec they are almost identical - both have snapdragon, 512mb onboard, wifi, 3g, capacitive input, 5mp camera, very similar weight, oh but the Leo has a bigger (4.3in) screen, costs less and is available now, on a contract...
Google trying to do an Apple here and is failing, miserably. The *only* thing it could have going for it other than the brand is the fact that you dont need to go to XDA-dev to download android for it..but then seriously, android is not that amazing (has nothing over WM 6.5 imo..and yes I have used both) unless you are truely anti microsoft and pro java. Sadly they don't have that "cool" branding to gain a mass of followers like Apple did (even I fell for that one lol..never again mind!).
Now if they were the first to release a snapdragon based phone with a slide out keyboard (ala Touch Pro/2)..THEN they would have something..as HTC still don't seem to want to do that yet.
edit: I read that the next version of the N1 may indeed have a H/W keyboard..that'l get me interested. Fingers crossed there is a WM version too! :) http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE60809H20100109

HD2 has a snapdragon does it? how much RAM does that HD2 have? i hope its 512 like the N1 since they are so similar ;) how is 130g and 178g similar weight?
Re: News - Google?s Nexus One may only have sold 20,000 in first week
The N1 isn't currently using that 512Mb properly though is it.:)

Yes it does have a snapdragon, and 512mb of ram :) 128mb is reserved for the GPU..which I would assume is the same on the N1, and if not then well, that dedicated GPU is another thing the HD2 has over the N1 hehe.
It weighs 157g (with battery), so I would say that is very similar in weight personally..27g isn't worth the price premium imo.

Re: News - Google?s Nexus One may only have sold 20,000 in first week
and link to android rom for hd2 actually while were at links
Re: News - Google?s Nexus One may only have sold 20,000 in first week
You don't need an android rom..just have to run haret from within WM to boot into linux/android.
There is a stripped down version of WM that you can flash which *just* boots wm then into haret (and therefore android) straight away which is effectively the same thing, but tbh I would just boot WM and then load android - give you the flexibility of both then (effectively a dual boot solution).
Anyway, off to XDA dev for the link..I do not have a Leo and don't intend to provide direct links, largely as I am not 100% sure on the hexus opinion when it comes to ROMs and this kind of thing as it is definitely a grey area.
Here is the Leo rom dev forum link tho..http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=534
edit: ok so I will admit that it does not appear to be fully stable on the Leo just yet, there is a test kernel/zImage but I am not sure how far that goes. Its a new phone though so give it a couple of weeks..eclair *will* be fully ported soon enough..if not I will eat my hat lol.

Looks like it's more than a few weeks away.. this is the last progress report from an xda chap working on the problem:

But you are probably right, it will work eventually so your hat is safe.
One of the biggest difference between the HD2 and Nexus One is the screen.
Nexus one has a 3.7" AMOLED touch screen whereas the HD2 has a 4.3" TFT touch screen TFT.

I can run android on my TD2 via haret as well - tbh I can't see what the fuss is all about it's no better than WM 6.5.3 (in fact I prefer the latter still). As for the all HD2 versus Nexus One stuff - we do realise they're both HTC built phones, right?
