I like Avast! and have been using it for a few years now. Never had any problems with it and you can't beat the price!
I used it after AVG failed me. I was quite pleased with it for some time. It caught a lot of malware and saved me quite a few times. I didn't like the interface though and switched to Microsoft Security Essentials when it was released. MSE and Avast are the only free AV programs I would recommend.
Was on Avast for ages - swapped to MSE and haven't looked back - it's lighter on my systems (suits netbooks far more) and completely hassle free.
Though I would agree Avast is good, perhaps you have never heard of Avira AntiVir?

NOD32 Hands down! even though its not free
yeah have also used Avast for years. Am now trying MS security essentials and whilst I like the fact that it is also free and relatively light (in terms of taking up processing power), it does come up with some daft warnings, like not knowing whether Steam is a safe program or not and would I like to send data to MS for analysis, I mean, jesus christ, they must know that steam is kosher. Teething issues no doubt. Still recommend Avast for slower laptops as it really is incredibly fast so looking forward to using the newer version...
