Looks shiny and nice, but basically a bit pointless at first glance.
Is this a feminine product?
No multitasking = instafail!
No webcam or any camera for that matter.
No multimedia ports
Small HDD sizes for something which can handle multimedia very well.
No flash (again)
How can this be the middle product of a smart-phone and a laptop when its missing the phone part as well?
One good thing from this is hopefully these changes in the OS will find a way onto the iPhone soon.
I can see this being an ideal replacement for net browsing without the hassle of loading up a PC/ laptop. Although I admit it's a bit pricey for just that. No doubt the legions of App developers will design loads of other reasons to buy one. I also see this as being an ideal games platform.

My books are available here for Amazon Kindle. Feedback always welcome!
I love my iPod touch, and I love my MacBook Pro, but the iDud seems to be the worst of both world. Not truly portable, no multitasking, an apple lockin, and possible most damning, no "one more thing". I was shocked to see that Steve Jobs didn't have any tricks up his sleve. No wow feature or shocking new feature. Overall I'd describe myself as extremely disappointed. I was hoping for something like say an education focused textbook and note taking system or some similar innovation.
Its totally pointless...
What are the real world applications of this? Other than a very expensive toy?
This would be interesting @ 300. If they do the usual US/UK conversion $499>£499 then it will be a niche market product.
Given that phone networks are trying to flog 3g bundles with netbooks, this would compete with that. They are both low powered devices. But apple have slick interface, widgets, and people who already vouch for its user friendly gui.
Lets face it, surfing net on a phone is crap.
My boss recons this will do OK because they will get the content providers, the likes of murdoc for news papers.
Then they will make ebooks 'cool'....
I think not, no flash, no multi-tasking, no video conf..... I wounder what the batterylife will REALLY be?

It's basically an overgrown iPhone - a sort of "iPhant"
It'll probably do well because Apple is behind it - the slate format could be a great crossover device but you really need a briefcase or good sized bag to carry it round. HP and others also have announced slate format devices but they don't have the mass market appeal of Apple.
Why you'd need an iPhone and an iPad, is something Apple will have to work to convince people, I think.
Yes I imagine we would've heard about that long ago if it was genuinely an Apple fab... nonetheless though, I suspect it'll be too slow to do what I would expect of a proper "tablet". After all, the iPhone doesn't multi-task... to what extent this does could be interesting.
Oh its no way going to be Apple fab, during the purchase fabless semi conductor companies where in vogue.
But as steve says it will certainly be based on a design, and ARM are very good at helping people leverage their designs into a more bespoke package.
What this will be is about producing as steve says a SoC (System on Chip), this can GREATLY reduce production costs, and power usage too. This is almost certainly what they will have been doing, helping create a product for the masses means attention to detail is required to maximise profit, which apple have been doing a good job of the last quarter

This is just a competitor to the ebooks with a little bit extra. That's it.
You could see it was a mega fail when the audience was so silent.
The MSI dual screen tablet looks more interesting than this Apple product.
Any word on international release dates?
I was in the Apple Store here at about 18:30 looking up Engadget (waiting for Avatar 3D to start) and was approached by a pretty clueless assistant. Apparently they were all talking about it in the back store, they don't get any advance information and were watching a live feed.
Oh and £130 (+ contract) for the GSM radio? really??
fear to think what the contract would be.
But.... and here is the but. If they get their act together, and have the rental services going, they might be on to something, say 100 ebooks a month, 1,000 songs, 10 movies for £30 a month?
Whilst I'd sooner hit a crippled kit with a baseball bat than buy into a walled garden, that would tempt me (so long as I was able to get reference ebooks )
