I am curious to what kind of prices this will sell for and what volumes will sell. I think it will still sell because it will appeal to people who will see this as a cool fashion item, it certainly has little practical use.

Re: News - Apple faces iPad backlash

    Storm in a teacup tbh.

Personally, if I hadn't bought a macbook pro recently, I'd have probably bought one - it's looks to be an ideal device for casual surfing, sending some emails, watching a film, reading an ebook etc, and one which has plenty of scope for expanded roles with the right applications.

As a lifestyle internet device I can see an awful lot of benefit for those who want to be able to use the internet etc, but don't want to faff with a computer.

If you feel that it's "just a big ipod touch", the lack of multitasking doesn't make it a good device, or the lack of flash would ruin your ability to browse the web, then it's not designed with you in mind, besides nobody is forcing you to buy one...

Besides, dubious naming and specification didn't stop the Wii from selling bucket-loads..

A netbook does all of those things, and at almost half the price. They are also more practical, more expandable, more customisable and arguably more user friendly. The lack of multitasking is nothing short of ridiculous imo.

That being said, my biggest concern would be that massive screen with next to no protection for it. It just just begging for it to be broken, or scratched.

    Nothing wrong with the iPad.

There is plenty people out there that don't want to mess with computers, installing applications, AV software, Windows, cables, desk space etc.

iPad fits the requirement just perfectly.

Also flash isn't even a standard so I'm very happy that iPad doesn't support it - everything to kill it off.

Re: News - Apple faces iPad backlash

I love the idea of it, I think in a few years time a pad like this will be as universally carried as a mobile phone is today.

Like all new devices it's way more expensive than I'm prepared to pay but that's nothing new. Back in my childhood I remember VHS recorders were stupidly expensive but they soon came down.
More recently HD TVs. Four and a half grand just a few yeas ago, now a couple of hundred quid.

Same with the features. Apple seem to do this. Get something, anything onto the market to establish themselves as the market leaders then use the fashion victims money to develop it properly. That's what they seem to have done with the iphone amd it's a strategy that seems to have worked well, both for Apple and for the industry..

The iPad will establish whether people want these devices or not then the other manufacturers will bring out their own.

I will definitely have something of the kind but I've never been an early adopter of new technologies so I'll wait until the price drops and then I'll get something that will probably be running Android.

I don't think so. This isn't a pocketable device. This is more something you leave on the coffee table and use instead of an HTPC. And, with enough connectivity, it should do that job great. But perhaps not this generation - imagine one with wireless HDMI..

I really don't think Apple are going to be losing to much sleep over the comments being made on the web about the ipad. We all know they're going to sell shed loads of them.

I actually quite like it, although I doubt I will pick one up, at least not straight away.

Same here, they'll sell loads anyway. Would be perfect for someone like my dad who can't even turn a PC on! I don't think I'll be getting one though, especially @ the likely £399 price range for the lowest model.

Has anyone else though how this affects the next iPhone due out? Looks to me like the next one won't be anything special considering they couldn't even put anything new/interesting in their newest gadget?...

Re: News - Apple faces iPad backlash

I think they'd struggle with higher pricing (for the base model) especially as it seems they are targetting the higher end Kindle.
But add on the usual $>£ conversion, 'Apple tax' and god knows what else they fancy charging & who knows!
