Re: News - Sonic the Hedgehog 4 back to his 2D roots

Finally! I have been saying this for years.

Sonic just hasn't worked in 3D, there have been the odd games that are better than others but none have matched the originals.

I remember getting Sonic Adventure on my DC when that came out and being all excited about Sonic in 3D, especially after how amazing Mario 64 was.

Was so dissappointed. The speed of Sonic really just didn't lend itself to that style of game, don't get me wrong, it was a great game, just not special.

Now to get Sonic Team to do a GOOD version of NiGHTs for the 360.

This is a good move! Sonic never really evolved into anything better than it originally was - some of the latest games were truly dire.
    Looking forward to this.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will be released in downloadable episodes with part one being available this summer and will be a direct sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles.

The game will be a two-dimensional side-scrolling platformer reminiscent of the original Sonic games and will follow the adventures of the series' main protagonist, Sonic the Hedgehog.
*Bounces around like a lunatic on happy pills*
Following the destruction of the Death Egg on Angel Island, Sonic takes a break and explores new territories by himself. However unknowingly his nemesis Doctor Robotnick had also survived their last encounter and is preparing a new trap to get rid of Sonic.
    Fixed that for you

I *still* play Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Flippin' love it.

They better not ruin it with crappy american sounding dialogue.

Though I liked the Sonic Adventure games, the 2D ones will of course always be the best ones - and I always preferred the name Doctor Robotnick than Eggman - Eggman was just what Sonic always used as an insult!

Actually I think Eggman is what he is called in Japan, for some reason it was Robotnik over here?

Sorry, I should have clarified that I always took it to mean that it was being used as an insult, mainly due to the original (and great) Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog cartoon (though I realise there were also plays on the Robotnick name, insults like "Robuttnick" etc.)

Re: News - Sonic the Hedgehog 4 back to his 2D roots

Was Robotnik not dropped after the USSR collapsed and it became insulting to Russians to have villains who's names ended in -nik or -tov?

But i have to agree, I always preferred Robotnik as a name, Dr Eggman should carry a guitar and sporadically play Beatles riffs ...

I didn't play that much of the original sonic games, but I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast. I really must finish SA2.. kept getting stuck on the Tails highway level and gave up for a bit.

Re: News - Sonic the Hedgehog 4 back to his 2D roots

As far as I'm concerned the original Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the top five games of all time- and none of them since has come anywhere close. The original had brilliant level design- if you missed some rings for example, it was usually perfectly possible to navigate back to the start of the level and start again, within the constraints of the 10m time limit. The levels were big but understandable. It was even possible to jump from a high height, hit the ramp on the way down and spin back up a tunnel to get back to the previous section of a level. There were usually two or more routes to the end of a level, and if you weren't on a time attack you could see them both.

In Sonic 2, they just went with what they thought everyone enjoyed, which was spinning up and going fast....and took the joy out of it in the process. The oil rig level is a case in point- you'd jump into a tube, get whanged around like a ball under a magicians cup, and end up somewhere totally random without any chance at all of retracing your steps. I still think the physics of the original- in terms of how you used momentum- have never been bettered. And then there's the music for the Starlight Zone.....

Up Down Left Right A+Start....my most used cheat ever, even more than the language switch on Vampire Saviour on the Saturn.

    QFT.

I wholeheartedly agree with that post, especially the bit about the Oil Zone, that level just irritated me.

Indeed - a true classic that one

Same here - I have fond memories of the summers in the early 90s where me and my mate who lived down the road spent hours playing this game and using that cheat, we would only have been 12 or so and this game always bring back good memories of a simplier time.

It also the only cheat I can still remember....never been able to memorise any others...!!!
