Norwegian outfit will offer a preview of the browser at MWC, but will it ever make it onto the handsets?

It's a nice piece of marketing though :)
And if it gets Opera more column inches and get peoples attention then I think it's a great thing.

I agree, and even if (as seems likely) Apple rejects the application, then it will only garner Opera with more publicity and good press, and Apple with bad press.
Clever stuff, i think, for Opera to do this.
What next? Opera to create a version specifically for Microsoft staff to use at work? :)

If the iPhone gets pocket opera, all it will need is a good screen and I'll probably buy one.

How come Apple are allowed to have a monopoly on the web browser on the iphone?

Because its their device, theyre not as large as Microsoft and noone can find a good enough excuse to investigate them over things.

I think the time is coming soon when apple's "free pass" on such things will be over.

I can't say I see the benefits of having Opera over Mobile Safari, really. Safari is fast, standards-compliant and well-integrated with the device. What is Opera going to do significantly better? I realise it can compress images, but most iPhone users pay a fixed rate for data anyway, and I don't really want to look at blocky images on a device that otherwise provides a near-desktop web experience.

If you think its 'near desktop'.
Time for a new desktop.
