    isnt it really 5850s that didnt make the cut? (which in turn are 5870s that didnt make it?)

    I don't believe so, the 5870 and 5850 are from different lines.

    Isnt the reason for so many 3rd party card designs at launch just that it is a 'binned' 5870 so in essence amd could of said this to partners:

    " If any of your 5870's dont make the cut, dont bin them as you can now use them for our latest product the 5830." Hence why they are similar size? And have similar cooling setups.

    I could and think i am wrong though
