YesIs an Atom-powered Slate PC running Windows 7 something you'd be interested in?
That said, I'd want a chance to play with one first, and a lot is going to depend on the battery life, which needs to be around 8 hours for my usage. But yes, I'm definitely interested...
Surely a dual-core Atom, at the very least?
To be frank... no. The only use I would have for that is note taking, when I'd want a keyboard. When it's matured a bit though, and my needs have changed, I'd say I might be in for a slate of some kind.
I think the whole idea of slates/ipads is a duff one, certainly with the current levels of performance/price.
For £360 a single core Atom is a no-no for me. Make it under £300 & maybe you've got me interested. Selling without a license would also be good for the folk (I bet a lot of us here!) that already have XP/Win7/etc lying around.
Am I the only one that doesnt really want a huge battery life? 5hrs would do me as it'd only be used when sitting on the couch/general lazing around & wouldnt be used for more than an hour or so at a time, if that made it cheaper then I'm in
Make it Dual core and cheap enough and i'll have one. I love my android phone, but find the screen is too small for all the things i want to do. A nice A4 sized tablet would suit me down to a tee!
Wow (shadowsong): Arthran, Arthra, Arthrun, Amyle (I know, I'm inventive with names)
my thoughts; rubbish!
Atom is terrible.
Windows 7 will never be a good slate OS.
other than that i love it.
what it needs tho is TI Omap4 SoC with dual-core Arm A9 CPU and an OpenCL PowerVR GPU.
then use the upcoming MeeGo linux touch-screen OS on it, and you will have a winner, even uwhen up against the iPad.

See, I'm the opposite. For note taking, I prefer hand-written notes, and if the handwriting recognition in Windows 7 is comparable or better to that in WinMo 5 - which I assume it is - this would be ideal. Plus I reckon even Atom + GMA950 would be good enough for Diablo II on the move
Probably not, but I'd see a slate as a business tool, in much the same way as I used to use my WinMo smartphone, and I'd like to use my current Android phone (but don't due to lack of decent handwriting recognition / capacitative stylus). As such, it'd need to see me though an entire day of meetings out of the office, with a strong probability of leisure use on the train to London and back as well, without any guarantee of a mid-day charge!
Solar Panels? In MANCHESTER?
Or, you know, on the tube, or in an office, or when I've actually got the thing lying down on a desk because I'm writing on it? Not that I'm knocking the idea of adding solar panels to pretty much anything that'll take them, mind - I'm sure they could be a useful additional drip feed to get those few extra minutes, but realistically I wouldn't want to be relying on it by the time I get to my 6pm meeting...
"Is an Atom-powered Slate PC running Windows 7 something you'd be interested in?"
Would be interested but will have to see how it does and looks like in real life...(i.e. hold it etc)
Well I'm in Scotland so it's even less likely!
My point was that when not using it (you're not going to use it for 8 solid hours are you?) you could flip it over & give it a little boost. Even if it only gives you an extra few mins it's a decent addition (dependant on cost).
If you're also using it in an office then it could be docked/plugged in so you'd not be [i]too[/] bothered about batt life anyway
Still no stylus option though? This is still my biggest issue with the ipad tbh, note taking is a bit difficult without one..
At least Win 7 supports pen input though so in theory a 3rd party stylus would work - wouldnt have the same level of integration as you get with an N-Trigg screen though.
I'll stick with my Touchsmart TX-2 for now, has a keyboard under the screen when I need it, and a touch screen that supports capacitive multi-touch AND a proper stylus..and thats the combination you neeed really. True flexibility
I'll be impressed if Apple/HP etc really do manage to carve out a market for these cut down devices though, I still really can't see the point.
