Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 benchmarked

Why no resolution information for Dirt2?

But yay, looks like it beats the four month old little card that uses much less power. If it hadn't have done that it would almost certainly be doomed.

Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 benchmarked

No massive surprises there for me, everybody seems to agree that its real competitor is the 5970... can't wait until Hexus labs can get their teeth into it and get some proper comparisons out there.

285/295/480/5870/5970 would do nicely for me, please

Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 benchmarked

the brief benchmarks pit NVIDIA's latest against an ATI Radeon HD 5870 across four benchmarks; DiRT 2 in DirectX 11 and Far Cry 2 in three resolutions
So it's faster than a 5870 in 2 games? Hardly conclusive, IMNSHO

Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 benchmarked

Its also a card thats like more than 4 months newer, yet uses more power and just beats it. Also as the 10.3a drivers proide a significant boost in performance for dirt in dx11 with the 5850 is this the same as the 5870? If so then i think Nvidias card didnt beat it by much.

If AMD went the route of brute power and not effciency then im sure they would have something a lot better, even better than the 5970 but still. Im waiting till hexus bench this too find out, power usage is a big factor along with price .

It's speedy - as expected, but how cherry picked are those results? Isn't Far Cry 2 a TWIMTP title? And were the 10.3a drivers used for the ATI I wonder?

As per the other posters, I look forward to a Hexus review.

So long as Hexus pick reasonable benchmarks! Not so sure if it's going to be the likes of QW:ET

289W card vs 200W card, should be 1/3 better if it's the same performance per clock.

    Thumbs up for 5970/5870/5850/480/470/295/285 comparisons.

    +1 on that

Seems to be the biggest online shooter of the moment so it would be good to see hexus getting it in there.

Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 benchmarked

Given that the 5870 is already too expensive for me, the chances that I will get a GTX480 on release (if ever) is basically nil. But if more games performs like Far Cry 2 than Dirt 2, I'd say that it's not bad at all. You wouldn't normally get 50% improvement with refreshes. I rarely take driver updates into consideration unless something was significantly broken in the first place, because both companies do bring their own performance enhancing drivers over time and the older card will of course be better optimised.

Power usage and price is relevant, and I do not expect nVidia to win on this end. I'll wait for tests by respected review sites before jumping to a conclusion, but given the size of the card, the educated guess favours AMD.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there is a huge gap between the 5870 and 5970 in terms of price (£300 and £575 give or take). Failing to best the 5970 doesn't necessarily spell doom so long as it's priced accordingly.

Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 benchmarked

Fudzilla is claiming the GTX 480 has a TDP of 250W, not 300W as some were fearing.

And assuming AMD don't react - they are manufacturing these cards at a much cheaper price, so have more room to cut prices.

Any chance when Hexus do get to review the card that we can have some folding stats to accompany the range of gaming benchmarks?

I think the problem with that is that it's almost impossible to guarantee a repeatable benchmark. It requires some fairly serious messing around to create a set of repeatable work units that you can feed into the folding engine. However, given NVidia's PPD advantage in folding already, you can pretty much assume that this will be the best available folding GPU bar none.
