Is it only me who doesn't understand the point of cards with huge frame buffers that'll never get used, and that are so hugely expensive that you might as well buy the next card up?

I guess the point in this case is to use the frame buffer for eyefinity setups where it is probably useful!?!?!
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!

True, but by the time you've got sufficient screens via eyefinity to max out the frame buffer, I refuse to believe a 5850 could run it quickly enough to be usable.

It was super-pointless 2 years ago when there was no displays which could push the limits, at least these days you have full multihead 3d in hardware which now just makes it mostly pointless.

I'm pretty sure CAD software could use it, although most would use a workstation card for the better driver optimisations. Workstations cards tend to have a lot of RAM too, about twice that on consumer cards, although the current generation may not need extra. It just depends on what you intend to use it for.

I see the point of 1GB, maybe 1.5GB but not 2GB, that said - depending on how the 470 turns out, and how much this card costs I'll prolly end up buying one. That or a couple of 5870's

As noted above, it's hard to see how this will swing a benchmark or a bang per buck comparison against the 470.

I dont see what differance a 50 mhz core bump is going to make especially against the 470. Surely it will go over 800 especially with the vapour x cooling.

2 gig is for big E-peen lol

Yeah, was assuming the GTX 470 will still beat this anyway ?

I have to say my standard sapphire 5850 with a flashed bios is making 900/4800 on the standard cooler, I would guess this toxic would have more headroom than that.

Re: News - Sapphire to thwart NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 470 with 2GB HD 5850 TOXIC

People seem to be making the assumption that graphics cards are bought on actual performance. If that was the case nVidia wouldn't have done the ridiculous 8800/9800/250 rebranding.

True... I've seen an awful lot of posts from people in the past (on various forums) who said "I just bought a 1GB graphics card" and think it's going to destroy everybody else's, and of course it's something along the lines of the GT210.

I don't think anyone in a position to read that would buy a card on anything other than performance numbers.

Thats true, I wonder how many think a 5450 is better than a 4890, you know they exist.
