Way too expensive on both fronts considering general slight performance increase.

The price difference is ridiculous considering they're all reference.

£430 for Gainward, £505 for MSI... insane.

This makes a Ati 5870 for £295 a better buy and hopefully they will reduce further.

When you're talking about cards that aren't in stock you can push any price you like :p If Gainward get 99% of all the orders, do you think they'll be able to fulfil them?

Why are novatech £50 more than the others?

Actually, I am hoping they will reduce their prices (of the 5850), and I guess putting the squeeze on Nvidia is as good a reason as any. But looking at AMD overall, I just get the feeling they need the cash too much because of their poor CPU position. Not sure they would want to start a price battle with Nvidia, even if they do have the upperhand due to die size etc... I do wonder whether Nvidia have priced the 480 way above the value point as against the 5870 almost deliberately not to start a price war. I'd be more interested in the bang for buck of the 470. Looking at those launch prices, can't see it doing too well though :(

And as for the different prices between reference cards, one factor to take into account is warranty. Anandtech made the sensible point that with close to 100c temps, getting a long warranty might be good idea....

(ps - I have no idea about the warranties on offer for those cards, so the price differences may be nothing to do with warranty, and all to do with attempts at price gouging)

With prices as high as this, only the hardcore fanboys will be getting these new cards.

Not necessarily. A bet there will be a number from XtremeSystems who would get it because that's what they do (play with new expensive, power hungry, fast toys). Irrespective of whether it is AMD or nVidia.

What would be interesting to see though, is whether Dell (Alienware) and other major system builders would have the 480 on their 'enthusiast/gamer' range. I would definitely be worried about the temperature affecting system stability especially as it gets warmer in the coming months.

As for the price difference, I think it's just a case of very low supply. Demand will no doubt be very low too, but I think different e-tailers will want to adopt different strategies (volume vs margin).

Alienware and others will be fine - they'll just offer liquid cooling, which it seems the 480 was made for ;)

I've been waiting happily for 6 months to see where the new cards from NVIDIA would end up being placed, both price / performance / power wise in comparision.

The performance gain simply isn't worth it over the 5870 considering the extra cost / power consumption involved.

I'll wait a little longer to see if AMD/ATI release a refresh before i finally make my decision, eyefinity looks like the winning option here as i only want a single card this time around (along with a better electricity bill and less noise)

ATI refresh is rumoured for Q4 2010 / Q1 2011. Don't know if you can wait that long :)

Given that the MSRP on the 58xx series was increased by AMD after launch due to demand, I think they have quite a bit of room to drop it down a bit, especially as it seems their CPU business might finally be about to roll out some price/performance competitive 6 core CPU's.

Would be nice to at least get the ATI cards back to "at launch" pricing!

I have Never owned an ATI card but this year, ATI will be getting my cash for sure!

I just need some cash first....
