There's no denying that NVIDIA needs to bring Fermi down to the mid-to-high-end space, and early rumours suggest it'll happen in less than two months.

I think first things first we should see 480 and 470 cards available in the shops, just checked Scan and its still pre-order!

I think the bigger question is whether a 460 could match the 5850's performance? I suspect it'd struggle...

I would be amazed if Nvidia place a slower or equal card at the same price as the 5850. They would need to under cut the competition if only to get some good publicity. Lets face it the 480 and 470 didn't receive a great reception.
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
I thought the 470 was to compete with the 5850...
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
These surely can only be speed/defect binned 480s with duff parts fused off. If so, they are seriously unlikely to be making any money on them - probably even a loss. Makes you wonder why they bother.
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
If the economics work out that the difference is between sticking a speed binned product in a different box and getting some of the money lost back, and chucking it all in the garbage, it's not a hard decision.
Nvidia are still stuffed for six months in the mid range upwards; they're only getting large gains on DX9 performance and who cares about that?

470 was to compete with the 5870, and it does on minimum fps, and beats it on least loss of fps from AA

Ahh, but they'll look good on some slides in the future! I think they'll keep the quantity numbers low (reducing their loss) and hire Donald Trump to say that the demand is "Huge." :)
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
Wouldn't it be the GTS 460 rather than GTX?
I don't know, nvidia's re-branding exercises have confused me.
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
Fermi's not quite another FX5800 because it is actually quite fast, but the pricing is totally unrealistic for the average consumer.
Depending on the amount of performance that drops off the GTX 460 *might* be alright, but we'll have to wait for the benchmarks.
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
Seems like it'll be a bit of a 5830. As in they disable so much of the card that it loses a large chunk of it's performance. I can't see this competing with the 5850.
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
wellthe 470 flopped against the 5850 and ever worse against the 5870 so why not have another try.

Surely it's better to sell a chip at a loss than throw it away at a total loss?
Or do I just not understand what goes on?
Re: News - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 arriving June 1st?
Given that the 470 and 5850 are pretty even, the 460 seems to be the sort of card that'd aim to take on the 5830. The 5850 is just wholly unrealistic. However, it really depends what specs it gets. If it's anywhere near the 470, it'll bust up the 5830, as the 5830 is far slower than the 5850. It's up to nvidia to price it right to make it competitive. I've given up on seeing competitively priced nvidia products though, so I'd expect this to be a heavily crippled card that can match the 5830 but rarely beat it, priced at the level of the 5850, around £240. TDP will no longer be an issue as the 5830 is quite inefficient too.

I guess it comes down to how much they would lose by just chucking the chip away versus how much they would lose by selling it with a card/heatsink etc with the shipping and any tax.
