I'd imagine its not called SQL2010 because its a minor version change , much in the same was Server 2008R2 isn't called Windows Server 2010. The jump will be less then SQL2005 - 2008.
It's probably also to keep 2 major server products in version number sync...
CTO: "I want 2008 R2 on our new servers, I saw it on the news site"
Sysadmin: "Of what product?"
CTO: "All of them"
Sysadmin: "That'll be a few grand...we're not licensed for it yet"
CTO: "Yeah but it'll all work together, must do it has the same version number."
Sysadmin: "True"
CTO: "Have a cheque..."
