$499 in the US which equates to about £339. We are so done for price in this country.
You will find with apple everybody is done on price in every country.
Just some get it worse than others.
Include VAT and the prices are quite close.
EG
32GB Wifi & 3G = $729
$729.00 = £459.15
£459.15 + VAT @ 17.5% (£86.65) = £581.80
If you look at the dollar rate at the moment it's painful
Total waste of money unless you have money to burn. Everything Apple is so over priced and feature restricted and yet people buy it in droves. There marketing dept is obviously doing something right. Never owned anything apple and this certainly won't change my mind.

Not evening, anyone who has a Macbook, IMac or Mac mini will tell you they are amazing machines, with amazing build quality, good component choice, an os that is 1000% better then any windows OS, however i do believe that Iphone and Ipad are both overpriced and not that good imo. I do have an ipod touch and find the apps okay but overpriced.
The iPad is basically an iPod touch with a bigger screen and battery:

I don't agree with their restricted politics. They don't open on me, I don't open on them. Period.

From the article:
"Apple has relied on tried and true technology for the first generation of this device. In some cases, technically speaking, Apple has even gone backwards from what we saw in the latest generation iPhone that we have torn down.
Case in point, Apple is not using the do-all touchscreen controller from Texas Instruments that it used in the iPhone 3G, but has instead gone back to the three chip solution seen in the iPhone 2G. Of course, the same space limitations aren't there in a large device, and so we would speculate that the three chip solution had a lower overall cost. You can see from the image that, relatively speaking, the iPad is basically a giant battery with a tiny board attached to it (outlined in red), with some space left over for a future 3G mobile communications board."

That is pretty ridiculous CAT, so it has lower spec than a Desire or HD2 (or even the old HD)? Apple do deserve credit for being able to consistently profit off its fan base.
Maybe it is worth buying an ipod touch and a magnifying glass instead...
(Btw, I do own an Apple product, an old ipod, and it has been a great music player for me over the past few years- flac, gapless playback, proper playlists, parametric equaliser, cross fade, replaygain, custom themes (and I can go on)... but if you haven't guessed this is all thanks to rockbox )

Supposedly the iPad has an IPS screen so perhaps this is one of the reasons it is not cheap. OTH,the cost of newer generation IPS panels such as the e-IPS one seems to be lower so even the screen may not be as expensive as many people think.
However since it has the same specifications as the iPhone 3GS will this have enough processing power?? I don't know TBH. The IPS screen has its advantages but TBH it seems more of a marketing point for Apple.
I see the iPad fad will be like that with the netbooks. Loads of people will buy them and then after a while will start to realise it actually does not have enough processing power. Then Apple will release a faster iPad and people will upgrade to this. It happened with the iPhone after all.
Edit!!
The screen seems to be 6 bit:

Most people would assume that an IPS panel is 8 bit.
