Hey,
I'm going to presume you acted on my heads-up in the other thread, and take full credit for this news story
Anyways, I installed this on my Dell Mini 9 last week - in general it's blisteringly fast at both startup and navigation within the OS. The UI is great - simple, intuitive and very quick.
However - it is pretty buggy and has various quirks with navigation, power management, networking etc. etc. It's a very promising OS though, and I'm sure they guys at MeeGo will have things ironed out in the next release

i just tried it on my dell mini 9 too, but i have to fart around to get the wifi drivers to work. it boots quickly from usb flashdrive, but i could boot and get a webpage on firefox within 30 seconds using osx so it's not really noticeably faster in a real world enviroment. it might boot faster on a laptop or desktop than windows but it's not really designed for that use. using it on an old pc to make it work as an internet/mp3 playing device might be interesting, but i'm not sure if it would support an old system
From what I understand, driver etc issues are meant to be resolved by the companies pre-installing Meego on their hardware - it has a small list of compatible hardware for demo purposes, but it doesn't seem to be shipped as a complete product. Maybe someone will make a Meego distro with all the extras
uni, are you using the stock Dell wifi card (the Broadcom one)? I swapped mine out for an Intel 5100, so it works fine. There is a workaround to add the Broadcom drivers in on the MeeGo forums.

yeah, all stock apart from 2gb ram upgrade, it's got the stock 8gb SSD. i saw the fix on the dell mini 9 forum but it involved a bit of typing and i didn't have the netbook connected via ethernet so making it a bit akward to get the driver etc. it'll be easier when hardwired and i can get downloaded to the flashdrive and cut and paste the commands into terminal as there was a bit of typing and i'm not used to linux so gotta take my time to make sure i don't make mistakes, whereas with windows i can do most things with my eyes closed
it would also be nice to get it to work with my 3 usb 3g dongle. it looked like it picked up the 16gb sdhc card but i didn't check to see if it could read it
Unfortunately I can't see that happing. The companies backing it (Intel and Nokia) are treating it as a way to sell hardware, they are not really interested in getting Meego to run on hardware they don't sell other than the very limited demos we have seen already. Even that will probably disappear once Meego hardware starts to ship.
We will probably also find that if you buy a Meego device, that there will be no easy way to upgrade it to more recent releases as you can with iPhones and many Android devices. As far as Nokia will be concerned if you want a device with the latest and greatest release of Meego on it, then you need to give them another €500 for their latest bit of kit.
To underline the point, I have a Nokia N810, which was released in 2008 and runs their Mameo Linux distro. There have been no firmware updates in 2 years. Their software update site for application software is often down, and it is impossible to replace the distro on the device with a better one such as Debian because some of the hardware only has closed source device drivers, and there is DRM preventing you from flashing the device with an unauthorized firmware. There is a project to port MeeGo to the N810, but it has the status of an unofficial community project, so I have my doubts that it will ever produce anything useful.
Personally, I won't take MeeGo seriously as a proper distro for handhelds, until Nokia release fully supported firmware images, for their 5 previous Linux handhelds (N770, N800, N810, N810 WiMax and N900). Much as Android offends me with the way they have riped up the rule book with Linux design, at the moment it looks like the more attractive option, as they do at least provided ongoing support and upgrades.
Would issues like that cut any ice if we where talking about the latest release of Ubuntu or Redhat? Of course not, a proper linux distro aims to support all hardware, and mostly succeeds. This is not a linux distro, this is just a way of producing firmware for a very limited range of propriety devices.
If Nokia/Intel where serous about pushing forward linux on hand-held devices, they would not have produced a separate distro at all, instead they would have partnered with a well established distro such as Ubuntu, to leverage their experience and infrastructure in packing up the huge amount of mundane Linux software. That way they would have been able to concentrate on what is important, namely the Meego UI, and device drivers for their hardware.
Please, please please.....The languages shouldn't be "English" then "British English"!!
It's "English" then "American English". Believe it or not, England had English first!!! The American version is an offshoot of our language, not the other way round! First credit for capturing the Enigma machine in U-571, now apparently they created our language! what next!!! Shesh.....
Well technically.. American English is closer to an older English than ours - we changed ours to become more French after the colonies had been founded hence why we have a bunch of extra 'u's in words
But I think the point remains - we should get first rights over it![]()
