Re: News - As leaked: Apple launches iPhone 4

So, other than this "retina" display and iOS4, theres nothing new and nothing that other people arent already doing..
I also note that to do the facetime video chat you need Wifi....

That said, I actually like it.

But, for me a phone that size has to do more than make calls and be geeky, it also has to be used as a work device, so that for me still means WinMo for the Office bits..

I wonder if this might drive up video calling. And looks like there won't been 64GB version on release (not seuprised).

    +1

Symbian, multitasking in phones since 2003.
    Three, video calling since 2003.
SE, HD video recording since 200X.

All the crazy apple fans are probably thinking apple created video calling

I disagree 960x640 IPS is impressive. Remember moar resolution = bigger epeen (for a given screen size).

I would get one because of the high res screen if:
    - it didn't have a crappy OS, it doesn't even have a proper home screen
    - it had a bigger screen 3.5" is pretty small
    - it didn't cost 3x the price of any other phone

I thought you needed 1280*720 pixels to play 720p (properly) ?

    Ah well.

Re: News - As leaked: Apple launches iPhone 4

The resolution is quite a surprise as that was one of the main reasons why I disregarded the old iPhones when picking a phone last year, although I agree the screen itself could be half an inch bigger to make better use of it. Just got price, battery life and closed software to get around now.

By the way, is there there's some form of Office App for the iphone? Even just some form of productivity suite that can be compatible with Office on the PC?

I presume there was no word on predicted battery life (although that means little anyway) because it's important to me that the phone can last an entire day of heavy use; for me, often night-time is the only time it can be charged conveniently.

Price is never going to drop to comparable levels while people keep buying them though, so my best hope for this is really that it stimulates HTC et al to make handsets that can compete on a hardware level - but as pointed out, they already do on most features. Possibly just the resolution that is currently not yet matched.

Still, I'm pleasantly surprised by this release - normally Apple seem to be playing catchup a couple of features behind the competition. This time, they've played catchup and even gone one step further. I don't much care for their attempts to make it seem like they were the first to do all these things, but tbh their marketing tosh wouldn't stop me buying one if I decided it did what I wanted.

Re: News - As leaked: Apple launches iPhone 4

The biggest troll is how everyone will lap Apple's 'SixAxis' up but didn't do the same with Sony's - granted implementation has(had) a lot to do with it but i can see it now: "Oh you guys check my iPhone, it has 'SixAxis' and the first device to do so, iLess than 3 you Apple xoxo"
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

My w880i is still a better mobile phone, its smaller and lighter (therefore more mobile) and it phones people (therefore is a phone) so by definition it is the better mobile phone.

Will wait for one of the sheep at work to 'upgrade' to one of these. Then point out that while they are talking to people on facebook on there iphone I am actually being social and have a drink with my friends and I am £30 a month better off for it.

How is it impressive? HTC/SE have had similar res phones out for 2 years now (X1/Touch HD) both 800x480, this isn't much better, it's only because they have had over 2 years to develop a better screen.

The 'multitasking' looks suspect as it is only showing an app store application and a built in application

Was speaking to a Palm technical rep a couple of weeks ago in an O2 store (they were installing new phones for the display)

Some of the stuff they have with their software/technical development kit seem interesting, and have the promotions for the developers.

Unfortunately I can see this becoming a 2 horse race between Apple and Android.

I'd like to see MS join with Pre as both have a clear market and they can take share away from RIM

And the Apple screen is .2" smaller so is bound to look sharper anyway. Does no one consider battery life on a portable product these days? Surely the AMOLED is much more power efficient!

Glad i'm getting a Desire tbh, this has nothing much over it, and I refuse to by locked down by Apple!
