Yeah I have to admit - it's damn expensive - nice that its SIM free, however i'm gonna see what the contracts have to offer and PAYG editions which will be locked.

No way I'm paying £599 for a handset!

Re: News - Apple begins taking SIM-free iPhone 4 pre-orders

Who wants my desire coz damn this phone is fine!

If someone is on a contract it works out, ie, a friend of mine is paying £5 a month for 300 minutes/unlimited texts/unlimited internet - add this phone on it works out at £30 a month.

Or for example has a desire like me, sell it for near £400, pay an estra £100 and get the 4g.

    Or free on a contract

Other high end phones are similar prices (£400-£600) sim free..just take a look around expansys.

I'll admit..I have decided to switch back to apple, and have pre-ordered one (on contract, not at the £600 price). If HTC would release a decent phone with a keyboard..i'd have taken it like a shot. As it is, they have not, and I dislike the current crop of non-iphones without a keyboard. Horrible to use imo. iPhone is the best UI imo in terms of being 100% finger friendly, and the apps are a nice if expensive addition.

I've got one reserved at the store and one on pre order. I'm hedging my bets with it. Seeing as the prices for the contracts don't cost any different to buying one on it's on I've gone that route. It gives far more flexibility in the future.

Still not a fan of Apple's restrictive practices. Next phone will be Android based, HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S I think....

Re: News - Apple begins taking SIM-free iPhone 4 pre-orders

£500 is OTT (I've been looking at the 16GB) but then again a lot of high end smartphones are around that price so it's not as bad as some folk think.

SIM free + 18month SIM only contract (300min, unlim txt, 500mb data) is £769
Contract (phone cost unknown, (100mins, unlim txt, 500mb data) is £540 + handset cost.

Seeing as Vodafones leaked prices were £189 on a £30/18m or £25/24m contact you can assume O2 is the same(ish) £540 + £189 = £729 so a small benefit to going contract cost wise but less mins.

I did have issues texting on the desire when I first powered it up, but I then ran the calibration tool and use it orientated so the buttons are bigger and I can type faster on my desire than I can on my iphone 2g which I still have (for the time being anyway...)

I can see a good/bad side to both handsets, but I'm using the desire more and more now as it's got a nice load of mins and texts each month whereas the iphones on PAYG.

I know of at least 4 iphone users that are going to upgrade their 3G/3GS models as soon as possible to the newer version and to be honest they are good phones, but the locked down nature of the software is what swung me away to another handset.

the screen res and snapdragon (well A4 but underlying arm arch is the same), has me wanting, but i cant go back to it. not after how open webos is, and how palm embrace homebrew. i just wish HPpalm come out with EVO style hardware with a portait slider kb.

Hence why I got the desire but I've come to realise that its not much of an advantage tbh, then again I havent rooted yet but the limited apps is a big issue for me especially on such a phone.

I'm not a super geeky person to care much about it but it did influence my decision on which phone I got, and in the end i dont really see much reasoning to back my decision. Whilst it is on par with the iPhone in many ways its a great competitor and at a lower price there isnt much of a reason not to buy it, likewise with the iPhone.

Re: News - Apple begins taking SIM-free iPhone 4 pre-orders

I was completely impartial (looking at HTC/Samsung and Apple). A 64gb iPhone at the 32gb price point would have been a vote winner in this round. My current savings are going toward a Samsung Galaxy S though. The price point looks far more reasonable and the expandable memory helps to swing it.

Lankius, tbh the HTC Desire/Nexus One are probably the best android phones atm, massive developers community and made by HTC who know their way arround android phones pretty well.

Its a cashback loyalty upgrade from carphone warehouse - idiots were charging the same for all phones for a 5 year customer upgrade as brand new instore customers :/ - eventually got there in the end after lots of phone calls and manager complaints.

    Mind you its sim only.

Still, I'm on £20 for pretty much the same (sim free) bar 800 mins. And equivalent prices for 300 minutes bottom out around £15 IIRC. Ah well, looks like that's not an option for me then
