I always found the main cause of technical issues with the 360 was dropping it on the ground while it was running, though my sample size may have been on the small side...Overheating was the main cause of the old model’s technical issues.

I think MS should change the message on this though - how about
If it's overheating, then telling them to wait 5 minutes and turn it on again is just ridiculous.The Xbox 360 is shutting down to protect the console from insufficient ventilation. Try putting it somewhere sensible next time.

You've got to wonder why they didn't add this mechanism about 4 years ago.
Actually being there was more along the lines of:Guess you had to have been there....Whoops! Oh bloody hell! Hopeit'sokayhopeit'sokay... Nooooo RROD, damn it! All these years and it dies a month out of warranty... I wonder if MS will accept it for repair anyway?

Unless for some bizarre reason none of the chips inside the normal-sized console have a temperature sensor.
Yeah, that's what I mean, the CPU probably doesn't have a built in sensor so they'd have to monitor heat using something else inside the console. I suppose they did have room to include much bigger heatsinks inside the same case though, so space wouldn't be an issue, unless ALL of it was used.
But surely if it was just a new firmware they'd have done it years back. Must be a reason for it..

My original, version 1, bought on day of launch Xbox 360 shut down the other day with a message telling me it had overheated and had shut down to prevent damage to the system.
So this is definitely a firmware thing, not a hardware thing.
as to why they've done it... maybe because they're overstressing the GFX...
You would think it might suggest clearing any excess crap from around the exhaust.
My friend suffered from the disc scratching thing, he did move it though.
While his console was being repaired, he bought his first HD tv. The console came back, he went to plug it in... and they'd replaced his console with one without an HDMI port! He was slightly angry...
