I think 10.0 took them a little too long to release, but now they have their new architecture in place they are making serious improvements in decent time now. It probably helps that the same engine is now used on multiple platforms meaning they are less costly to produce and the same number of developers can work on more improvements and less porting.
I really do believe that Opera deserves more recognition than it gets. I do my bit though, it gets installed on every re-install I do for people :)

This!
It still amazes me they manage to lead more often than not - proper 7 integration way ahead of everyone else etc. of late for example.

If you're referring to displaying tabs instead of windows in the taskbar, I always have too many tabs for that to be remotely helpful. I can't remember how I disabled it, but I'm glad I did :)

More to it really - progress for downloads for example (there's a specific COM interface for this in W7 that you have to integrate with). The option to disable this is in windows itself (not sure if opera has it too). I find it useful but then i don't open excessive amounts of windows :P

I never really noticed the download thing (presume you mean green bar going across the icon?) but that's certainly a nice feature. Guess I rarely download anything with Opera though.
As for multiple tabs, I have about 10 permanently open tabs and anything from 0 - ~15 more (if I load up Hexus and haven't been on all day, I'll load all the interesting articles at once).
Gmail, xkcd, Hexus main page, Hexus Classifieds, Overclockers For Sale & Distributed Computing, three Folding stats tabs, and a wikipedia page.
I could make do with fewer fairly easily, but then I use most of them several times a day and the rest at least a few times a week. :)
