Surely it'd have to be a watercooled-only product? I mean, if a single GTX480 can produce 90c+ on full load, than this, in theory would produce 180c *at least* on just air. If Asus pull it off, then there can really be no doubt that they make the most insane yet awesome components in the world.

If you ever get a chance, see the ARES card in real life: it weighs over 2kg, and most of that is the cooling.

GageC, Temperature dissipation isn't linear, the bigger the temp gradient, the faster the "thing" will lose heat.

Watercooling or a very well designed (and big) cooler.

    When's the Hexus Open Day?

Asus are just showing off! This card would be sick.

No doubt it'll cost a small planet too
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

It isn't just that simple, even though theoretically double the thermal energy will be dissipated. Also 180C isn't twice the temperature of 90C, as 0C isn't absolute 0... They will need a beast of a cooler to keep them running at 100C or below...

I'm guessing they will be OC'd as well for even more WOW factor.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: News - Leaked shots allude to ASUS MARS II graphics card - twin GTX 480s

Not too hard to cool (one), not too hard to power (one), but it'll be one of the noisiest graphics cards ever made, if it's air cooled. 580W of TDP can be removed by a three slot 12" cooler, but you'd need to have a trio of 92mm fans at 5000rpm or so to do the job at full load. That's going to be pretty earsplitting.

This card is only viable if it is water cooled! So add even more money to the overall cost. I guess a retail price in the region of £1500

Re: News - Leaked shots allude to ASUS MARS II graphics card - twin GTX 480s

It really annoys me when Asus do this. They build a fabulous concept card, then air cool it. By being a custom PCB design none of the existing waterblocks fit it, and so you end up with a card that can only be air cooled - that is if you want to keep it under warranty. I believe that the type of people who are going to want this sort of card are extreme users, and those that buy the "crazy but cool" spec pcs that you see advertised in CustomPC.

Extreme users will often invalidate warranties, so they are not concerned.

Those who buy the "crazy but cool" spec are exactly the sort that know their hardward, and buy the best available - Asus - this means they will likely buy the very vest hardward and then try to get more out of it, ie overclock and/or water cool. Having to void the warranty is a major no-no.

Asus have completely discounted these folk by NOT designing a watercooled version. At £1000 per card, that's a hell of a lot of potential sales to be disregarding... No wonder eVGA do so well, their cards are fitted with watercoolers, but their range is not warranty voided by swapping out the factory fitted hsf if the cooling is upgraded, which can of course be easily done as they use reference designed cards in the main.

Asus - Great idea, but please think it through fully. Air cooling is good, but those of us with water cooled loops like them and want the entire system water cooled where possible, that's why we spend so much time and money on setting up our loops.
