I've done my part to get Android out there. Currently, I have got 7 people to buy Android based phones. And they all love them.

Yep I've done my bit too, converted at least 4 peeps at work to Android phones and they don't regret it one bit either.

Re: News - Android mobile sales triple in 2010

"The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name. Operating systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right," said GfK analyst Megan Baldock.
I certainly did - "shall I buy an Android phone from HTC, or a Sony X10?" - was the debate, (I bought an X10 eventually, although there was a strong sales pitch given in the store for the Samsung Galaxy, and I migrated from PAYG to contract).

So far my 'droid phone has been okay, (would dearly like to find out how to get personalised MP3 ringtones for my contacts on the X10 - it appears to only support one MP3 tone - boo!), but I strongly suspect that the handset manufacturers haven't cottoned onto the potential major plus for Android. Namely, that it should be possible to keep droid phones relatively current. It really peeves me that when 2.2 is "out there" that Samsung, Sony et al are either not doing upgrades to even 2.1, or the upgrade is going to be delayed by 6-8 months or more.

The app store is pretty good, the OS (generally speaking) works in the ways I expect, so it's only the lack of multitouch that causes me a slight bit of iPhone envy. In every other respect I think 'droid is at least equal to iOS.

Here's hoping that Google can keep up the momentum...

Crossy, should have gone for the HTC Legend/Desire and/or Samsung Galaxy S.

The major down point for the X10 is that is only comes with 1.6, and AFAIK it doesn't have 2.1/2.2 available to it.

....Which is why there is no multi-touch.

Not aiming this at you personally, but in terms of the Andriod experience, the X10 is a horrid phone.

Re: News - Android mobile sales triple in 2010

I too have converted a few on android after they've had a play with my phone

I needed a new phone as my iphone was absolutely shocking for audio quality in calls and if I was outside, the chance of hearing the caller was practically ZERO if it was windy. I had used a desire before and the audio levels were higher and much clearer and the bonus is that I've got all my stuff synched with google so if my phone ever dies or is lost, I can recover all of it very easily.

The only thing I can complain about the HTC is that it appears to have a volume limiter on the mp3 playback side of things which I definately want to remove soon

You are the only person I know that says this. Got any other source? I'm curious, my MP3s are plenty loud. Pre & post root.

Apparently it's T-Mobile ROM only. Now seeing as virgin are just a rebranded T-mobile ROM I reckon they've left this in their ROM

Re: News - Android mobile sales triple in 2010

I am about to upgrade from my Nokia E71 to an adroid phone.

Stuck between choosing the Galaxy S or the desire.

Desire feels nicer, firmer and also battery seems good.

Galaxy s has superior CPU/GPU power, better screen and also bigger screen. - but feels cheap.

Also alot of first reviews commented on the Galaxy S having software glitches - have these been sorted now with updates?

I seriously considered the Desire, but got bamboozled by the quoted battery life for X10 v's Desire - plus a scan of the forum brought up a couple of folks claiming that they had to recharge their Desire 2 or 3x a day. Not good.
I've had some real bad experiences with Samsung gear in the past, (especially their phones), so I wouldn't even consider the Galaxy.

Yes, it comes with 1.6, but 2.1 will be available "real soon now" - see http://channel.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=25100. Plus there's been a lot of talk on Sony's own blogs that integrating Time-/Media-scape with 2.1 has proven to be a lot less problematic than expected, so 2.1 will be here end Q3, (depending on your teleco provider). That said, I'd swap both 'scape programs for early access to 2.2 in a heartbeat.

No problems with the X10, although imho the charging socket design is pretty dumb - crappy rubber flap covered, and I prefer the power socket on the bottom of the phone.
And don't worry, I'll not take it personal... Actually I enjoy the reasoned feedback I've come to expect on Hexus (so unlike the vitriolic abuse you get on The Register)
As far as it goes, I figure I'll stick with the X10 for now, and when the time comes for new phone I'll be spoilt for choice of 'droid replacements.
