That means that the average student is already going to be paying $100k in fees. What's an extra couple of hundred for the pretty laptop?
What is more interesting is are they using Open Office or still on MS Office?
I think people forget quite how much of the world uses MS Office which in turn drives people to windows at work, so they are familiar with it at home.

As a recent grad from a UK university, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't the same in this country. Of course, it depends on courses and universities, but I'd say in my department, more than a quarter of the laptops were Macs, easily.Originally Posted by TheAnimus

Sure, it's (more often than not) the parents putting down the money, but the student has a lot of say in what brand they go for. This is especially true since a lot of parents probably don't have a clue about the differences between PCs and Macs.
Apple has a pretty good student discount that helps uptake, but I tend to agree that price still comes into it more in the UK. Poorly built and spec'd sub £400 15" laptops were most common...
Apple laptops are pretty good to be honest, especially the Macbook Pros.
It does seem students are the most likely to fall for the apple marketing, if you own apple hardware you will get layed you know.
Also after having a student mate with one, his main reason for buying was that he got a massive discount. It almost cancelled out the apple premium tax!

We didn't have laptops when I was a student and Hexus was still just a field. I had an Amiga 1200 & an HP inkjet in my room and was regarded as dangerously techy.

Heh, looks like I'll be joining the elite 2% with Lenovo's um... fashionable offerings.
Thanks to their buy a Mac get an almost free iPod touch as well.
Because students like to look cool....simples. They'll feel different once they start to spend their own money...
As a recent graduate [i graduated this year] I can whole-heartedly say, for my uni/course at least that it's complete bull... i could count on one hand the number of people I met/knew who had a mac [of any kind]...
Apple Macs are the Rockport of the 21st Century.
They're only purchased to look hip and cool and to help you look trendy when we all know deep down that they are just a glorified PC innards in a fancy shell with a modified linux based OS and a price premium levied on them to boot.

Which is why its so shocking they managed to make it so very insecure!

A friends sister was telling me how great they where and why I should buy one, the point of you don't need an anti virus made me laugh.
As a told her, the more Macs there is out there the more viruses will be aimed at them, so telling us all to buy one might not do her too many favours.
Another one who likes insulting Apple users' intelligence. Please don't assume that every Apple user is incapable of making an independent decision. It gets very boring. What would you say if some Mac users bought a Mac because they preferred the OS - or, believe it or not, because it was just the best option for the tasks the user was doing?
The newer MacBooks are pretty well-built and have very good battery life compared to the majority of PC laptops. Those are pretty compelling factors for a student lifestyle. I'm not gonna deny that the 'fancy shell' counts - but I think there was more than one reason that my Uni library was crawling with MacBooks.
