Northern Ireland is being ditched in these tests despite being the first to get 100% broadband availability!!

You can get fibre optic broadband with speeds of up to 40Mb now.
Seems a bit daft, the box is just down the road and yet I can only get 18Mb, think I'll stick with 50Mb virgin :/
In Fife ? Dalgety Bay.... Fife?! .... Dalgety Bay.... *HEAD EXPLODES*
Can't say I am too enthusiastic about BT's "ambitions" I live 15 minutes outside of Edinburgh city and have no access to Fibre or any high speed ADSL, best I am able to get is a 3MB connection.
Wonder how many more years I will have to wait til I see the benefits of this scheme.
Dalgety bay.....

Yep, bit of a shocker to me too - next thing you know they'll be putting major sporting events in some place other than London.
Of course, you could always relocate to the Kingdom - after all there's no tolls on the bridge these days (although FETA make damn sure to dig it up regularly)
"Could be a challenge" - ha. Definitely a challenge. And one I'd just love VM to rise too - although I'm pretty sure that they're so poor that it ain't going to happen. In what could be perceived as a challenge to Virgin Media, Brendan Dick added: "BT is the only company consistently investing in a range of broadband technologies across Scotland."
VM's got the lead on download speeds, but if BT can deliver 10Mb/s upload then that's a good deal faster (I think) than VM's. Of course, when/if VM start selling the 100Mb/s (or better still the in-trial 200Mb/s) service then even the "up to" 60Mb/s that BT's promising is going to look a little skimpy. The spat gained momentum in early 2009 when BT announced the 29 locations that would benefit from its fibre-optic broadband service this year. Virgin coolly responded with a list of locations that could already receive Virgin's 50Mb/s service.
That said I'm quite happy with my squitty little 10Mb/s service - I regularly get 1200KB/s download speeds and it's very reliable.

Its all a bit of a joke really, you see the super fast phrase thrown about often.
In my previous house which was about 600 metres away from the exchange i got 16Mb speeds.
My new address which is just over a mile away from the same exchange and I'm lucky if I get 3 Mb.
Personally I think BT needs to start replacing the old wiring that has been laid instead of pushing out further all the time. Improve on what they have already then push it out into other areas
I dont care for these upgrades since my download speeds are fine, its better upload speeds that concern me. 10Mbits is not bad but not quite there yet
Can people in Fife use computers?
Joking aside, 40Mbps is nice, who seriously needs or currently uses that though?

Yawn!
More whining about BT.
Cable is a whole different beat to the old phone system we have in the UK. Virgin have no universal serivce obligations so have no requirement to extend their netowrk to areas they don't see as being finantially viable. Meaning they can cherry pick the most profitable areas to operate. BT have to offer a service to everyone. This is expensive.
so they should ditch these clever techniques that help to squeeze a little more out of the old infrastructure? (which we have because we built it so damned well in the first place and it didn't get bombed to crap in the war unlike some other countries) Fine, but that will mean that you won't see any improvement in bandwidth except in the highest population densities for a long long time.
If Virgin offer a better service in your area then well done you. Personally I would like the option but as Virgin haven't significantly increased their network since the rebrand from NTL/Telewest (and not a lot of expansion for a while before that) I would say quite confidently that Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will never get Virgin cable in any way shape or form.
You people are pleased with 10Mbits for downloading ?
I have a 45Mbits speed for downloading IN ROMANIA from 2005. Now (it statrs from 2009) a "small" company (RCS&RDS) builds G-PON network in whole country. That means optical fiber to every house . .
Waaaahoooooooooooooooo! Ignoring the bit about Dalgety Bay (WTF? DALGETY BAY?!?) It's the 20,000 in Dunfermline that I'm interested in! I've been watching shedloads of BT vans clatter about the place for weeks now so it's about time it was officially announced. They still haven't updated the Infinity website as I'm still listed as being unable to get it. Tried a few other Dunfermline numbers and all no go...

My books are available here for Amazon Kindle. Feedback always welcome!
But London alone probably has the GDP of Romania! In fact, it's better to invest in new cabling in areas of high density; you get more customers for same area. Ergo, it's far better to do up London than some sparsely populated area,
I think it's ridiculous that they're rolling out "super-fast" broadband when my hometown hasn't even had ADSL2 enabled yet and I only have one LLU. This is going to create a huge bandwidth difference between cities and smaller towns/villages.
