10GbE cards might 'not' be that expensive but switches cost a bomb!

I bet that card costs around £250 and the switch will cost about £3,000 (unless you want a Cisco one and you should be looking at about £30,000)

    I still want one though!

Yeah plus no doubt the cables will cost a lot, the card will be the enticing force.

    I haven't bothered moving to 1Gb yet

4Gb fibre cards would also be quite good as add-ons...

2/4 10Gb ports are often available on normal 24/48 port 1Gb switches for uplink, so it's a great solution to remove bottlenecking.

I would love to get our virtualised datacentre using 10 GbE for the storage and inter cluster comms
I would love it even more if our SAN used flash based storage to take advantage to the bandwidth available on 10 GbE.

But can it make games any faster ALA KillerNIC ?

Different target market and 99.9% is CPU/GPU limit not network.

Re: News - Thecus launches C10GT 10Gb Ethernet adapter

How would a faster network interface make games any faster? KillerNIC is a mostly rip-off, it claims to reduce latency and offload some of the work from your CPU and yeah it does that to some extent but the difference is negligible, especially considering the price you pay. The amount of CPU time required for network processes for online gaming is relatively tiny, so unless you have a PC which is struggling with games to start with it's not going to make much difference and even if it does it's not going to be noticeable. About the latency, the few microseconds the KillerNIC might shave off the already tiny latency created my a standard NIC just isn't going to make any difference. And anyway, the NIC this thread about isn't designed with games in mind, it's from a NAS company.
