I was sure virgin was already covered in most of the south west, when I lived in plymouth I had cable (telewest back then)
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?
I can get 512 kbps where I live in my particular part of the sticks.
I have no expectation of it getting any faster any time soon. Gits.
Blimey, BT finally waking up & realising there in the 21st century? Up to a whole 20mb/s, excuse me for feeling BT is last to this party when VM* have been doing this for months....and most of the world for years...
*yes, this is me defending VM, I never thought the day would come...
Likewise, BT can offer me up to 1mb/s, but was told it probably even wouldn't reach that.. Virgin on the other hand can offer me 50mb/s and said I could expect 100mb/s within 18months.
BT are so far behind its amazing, I remember having cable 10 years ago in plymouth!

in BT's defence, at least this upgrade will cover everyone connected to their exchange, and not just the street or areas that TeleWest or NTL decided to cable. Virgin haven't significantly increased their network since their inception.
This is probably why they are making a song and dance about Wales and the South West as there are alot of people in these areas that can't get cable.
I live in a cable area but still can't get it because we live down a 50metre drive way, but people on the street leading to our drive way can get it.![]()
This is exactly what I meant. Lots of people say "Oh I live in a cable area" well that's good, but can you actually get cable?
Perhaps I get defensive because we will never get cable in Aberdeen. We used to have a cable TV system here, in fact it was one of the very first in the country. However it was analogue only and strung over telephone poles instead of underground. Digital was impossible without ripping it up and starting again. They went bust.
There is nowhere near that has cable, so virgin would need to build a network as well as extend their back haul infrastructure all the way up from Dundee.
Have a look at this map: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/im...age-300504.png
Their coverage is pitiful!! And yet nine times out of ten when someone asks about broadband someone will reply "why not get cable?" like it is an obvious choice.
Sorry, rant over.
funkstar, i know a virgin doesnt cover as much as they want you to think but is that map actually correct? Telewest and NTL, it is the same as virgin media albeit a name change but a lot has changed and if i read that correctly it was done 30/05/04?.
Has a lot changed though? I've read recently, perhaps on here, that Virgin have not added any significant areas to their coverage since the re-branding. They have expanded down existing streets and enabled people in non-covered pockets, but other than some brownfield developments where they have been able to piggy back on other services going in, that is about it.
I could well be wrong in this, but I'm fairly certain this is right.
Once you go out of Plymouth though, you can't get/have cable. Down here in Cornwall we are stuck with ADSL, whilst generally about I'd say 85% of the southwest gets some pretty decent reliable broadband, the other miniority has to suffer.
Friend of mine has broadband but where he lives means its WORSE than dial up and he's taken out two mobile broadband contracts with three because of it. Whats worse is that the exchange is over subscribed and BT have no plans to sort it out for the forseeable !
Fair enough, im not really clued up with virgins network as all i know is that all my relatives/mates seem to have it... only 2 have BT/ Sky and its laughable with their connections as the ping is terrible (150+) and download speeds of like 2Mb tops. However i think at the end of the day if your lucky enough to be in a cable area and unlucky enough not to be close enough to a BT exchange with LLU O2 or the other good provider then you have to stick with VM.
*sigh*
Virgin can offer cable to as many or as few areas as they want. They can lay cable only where it's profitable. BT has an obligation to provide service to every hamlet and rural outpost in the country. Virgin doesn't. It isn't exactly a surprise that Virgin's network is better where it exists. BT has to spread its resources much thinner.
