I tried the new Essentials beta, but I could not find out how to do remote desktop between two machines, resulting in me having to return to Live Mesh.
Hopefully when they launch it properly it will be more clear and easy to do

It's wrongly stated, that Windows Live Sync Beta doesn't allow Remote connection to the PCs. Simply open the program and click "Remote" (on the top of the program window, right to the "Status"). Sorry, I probably wasn't clear. Live Sync Beta certainly does support remote connections, but I was referring to pre-merger back in the first part of this year. At that point, only Mesh supported it.
You're completely correct in that the current Live Sync Beta supports connection sharing.
